This post is all about how movies inspire world-building for your novels, so you can use visual storytelling to make your world feel real.

Ever watched a movie or TV series and thought, “Wow… I wish I could live there!” From the magic-filled halls of Hogwarts, to the awe-inspiring nature of Virgin River, to the strange alien worlds of Star Trek, all these worlds we see on screen can spark endless ideas for our own stories.

Today, dear happy writer, I have five tips for you on how we can use the visual details from movies and TV shows to design fictional worlds that your readers will love. From memorable settings to cultural details, we’ll explore exactly how to capture that on-screen magic and bring it to life in your own novel. Let’s discover together how movies inspire world-building for your novel.

In the previous blog post, we explored how movies and TV shows help to level up your writing by inspiring unforgettable characters and engaging plots. Today, we continue our journey into the world of movies and TV shows by exploring ways in which movies inspire world-building for your novels and help you create rich, immersive settings for your own stories.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how movies inspire world-building.

1. Noticing the visual details that make worlds feel real

World-building isn’t just about the big picture, like the design of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. What makes it come alive are the small details, like the portraits that can speak and walk from painting to painting, the tiniest magical objects and creatures, and even the house robes in their distinct colors. It’s these little touches that make a reader feel like they’re part of that world.

Now, think about your own novel. What small, vivid elements can you incorporate into your own novel to make your world even more original and memorable? When you watch a movie or TV series, take a moment to notice the subtle visual cues—the patterns of a dress, the decorations of a café, the uniform of a starship captain. Then imagine how you could translate those visual cues into rich, descriptive writing.

Here’s a fun exercise for you: watch a movie that is based on a book, like Harry Potter. Watch the movie and then compare the on-screen visuals to how J. K. Rowling described them in the books. Reflect on how you can use similar descriptions in your novels so your readers feel like they’re not just reading your story, but are actually seeing the world and living inside it?

So, the next time you’re watching a movie or TV show, pay close attention to all the small details you see. Those details are the secret ingredients that turn your fictional world from “pretty good” to “I never want to leave!”

2. Learning how worlds reflect the story’s mood

World-building isn’t just about creating cool settings—it’s also one of the most powerful ways to set the tone for your story. If you want to provide a completely immersive experience for your readers, make sure that the world of your novel reflects and reinforces the tone and overall feeling of your story.

Imagine setting the intense, high-stakes drama of The 100 into the cozy, twinkle-lit streets of a Hallmark small-town romance. I like each, but in its own specific setting. That’s because the setting perfectly supports the story’s tone. A feel-good holiday backdrop, where everything is brimming with optimism, would instantly deflate The 100’s tension. Similarly, the lighthearted love story in a small-town romance would be completely overshadowed in the gritty, post-apocalyptic wasteland of The 100.

When watching the movie, take note of the world-building aspects you can implement in your own writing to enrich your story. Analyze the lighting, the color palettes, and the architecture, and figure out how to use these elements to amplify the tone and genre of your novel.

3. Borrowing cultural elements to enrich your setting

Besides creating memorable settings and setting the tone of your novel, world-building also consists of the cultural elements of your world. And while culture matters in every genre, it’s especially important in fantasy and sci-fi, where you actually have to invent new races, religions, and societies from scratch.

Going back to The 100, we see that the grounders developed a very different culture, beliefs, customs, and even a different language compared to the people who lived on the space station. Discovering these differences and understanding the grounders’ worldview is part of the fun of watching this show.

The same is valid for any movie or book you love—full immersion comes from well-developed cultures. When watching a movie, pay attention to what makes those cultures unique and which elements enhance the story. Study their traditions, language, clothing, food, and even small everyday details to get additional inspiration for your novel. Compelling world-building is in the details. Your reader wants to know what makes your world unique, and carefully planning all these elements can make your world feel alive and give readers a reason to be fascinated by it.

4. Using sound and atmosphere for immersion

Besides the visual cues, when comparing a movie to a book, another big difference that stands out is sound. In a movie, you can actually hear the birds singing, the person shouting, and the fireworks exploding. And you can definitely notice when total silence is strategically used to heighten the impact of the story. It’s impossible to directly experience these sounds in a book—but you can make your readers imagine them through vivid descriptions.

Watching movies and TV shows can help you with this. Pay close attention to what audio details filmmakers are using to bring the scene and the fictional world to life. Is the scene set in nature where you can hear the melodic sounds of birds, the gentle flow of a river, and the powerful gusts of wind? Or is it a tense moment where the lack of sound heightens the emotional impact of the scene? Or is it a chaotic, loud marketplace?

How would you describe all these scenes using showing instead of telling? And it’s the showing part that we can learn from movies. Instead of saying, “It’s a busy market,” let your readers hear the bargaining voices, the metallic sound of coins, and the arrival of trucks with fresh produce. And that’s what will make the reader feel like he’s actually in that market.

As a fun exercise, pick a movie scene, close your eyes, and just listen to the voices, the sudden noises, and all the background sounds you can identify. Now put them all into writing. Then, implement the same descriptive elements in your novel so readers feel like they’ve stepped right into your world.

5. Incorporating unique landmarks and signature spaces in the design of your fictional worlds

All the memorable fictional worlds from the novels you loved feature certain iconic landmarks. Just think of Hogwarts, with its moving staircases, the Room of Requirement, and the Forbidden Forest. Just hearing those names instantly transports you back into the magical world of Harry Potter. These signature spaces are powerful tools that create more vivid and immersive worlds and enrich the storytelling.

What’s a signature space that immediately comes to your mind from Harry Potter or another movie or TV series you loved? Let me know in the comments below the video. And then take a moment to reflect on it. What made that landmark or space memorable? Was it the backdrop to an epic battle or a heartwarming moment? Or do you remember it simply because it’s such a unique element in the design of that world? Does it have special significance for one of the characters?

Asking yourself these questions could inspire ideas for your own novels—helping you craft unique and meaningful landmarks that will truly make your story unforgettable.

So next time someone tries to make you feel guilty about binge-watching your favorite TV series, just smile and say, “It’s not procrastination—it’s research for my novel!” Now go ahead, dear happy writer, and design fictional worlds so vivid your readers will never want to leave.

This post was all about how movies inspire world-building. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:

Today, dear happy writer, we’re diving into how movies and TV series can help you create unforgettable characters and plots! Let’s discover together how we can find writing inspiration from movies.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how to get writing inspiration from movies and TV shows.

Writing inspiration from movies and TV shows

If you’re stuck in your writing, watching movies and TV shows is one of the best ways to find inspiration. And you’re having fun and relaxing at the same time!

Who said watching TV is just a waste of time? Well, it might be if you do nothing else and forget why you started watching in the first place. But, in moderation, movies and TV shows can inspire your writing through their captivating characters, engaging plots, and breathtaking worlds. Today we’re covering characters and plots, and next time we’ll talk about world-building.

Improving your character arcs

Learn from the character arcs of your favorite characters

One of the best character arcs I’ve seen in a TV show is that of Murphy from The 100, with Octavia’s character development from the same series coming as a close second. It’s complex characters like these that provide the best opportunities for learning character development, and they can help us level up our writing.

Analyze your favorite characters. What flaws did they have in the beginning? What kind of challenges did they have to overcome to change? Which was the moment you went from “I hate that guy!” to “Wow, I can’t believe it’s the same person”? Think about that transformation. That is pure storytelling magic. That’s what the readers want to see, and that’s what the characters need so they will forever remain in the reader’s mind.

By studying these well-crafted character arcs, we learn how to shape our own characters’ journeys. We discover what flaws and wounds to give them to provide them the best opportunities for growth as the book progresses. We also learn what kind of battles they need to fight, whether with others or with themselves, so they can overcome those flaws. And most importantly, we see how to guide them through those battles so they can emerge as the heroes they were always meant to be.

Create characters based on your favorite characters

Here’s a fun exercise: Imagine bringing your favorite character from a movie or TV show into the world of your story. How would they act? Would they thrive or would they struggle in your world? How would they grow?

One of my favorite characters from a TV show is actually the inspiration for a very important character in my book series. I’m keeping quiet on who it is for now (no spoilers!), but trust me—a character you love can have a massive influence on your own writing.

Is there a character you love so much and wish their story could go on forever? Let me know in the comments which character that is and which movie or series they’re from. Maybe that character could inspire one of your own characters. They will be different, of course, but the similar character traits keep the essence of your favorite character alive in your imagination. And it’s your stories that will keep them alive in your readers’ hearts.

Improving plot and plot twists

Mastering plot by watching your genre

Whether you’re a beginner writer, like myself, or have been writing for many years, there’s always something new to learn. A good movie or TV show can teach us how to improve story structure, add plot twists that will stun your readers, and leave readers hanging on the edge of their seats with killer cliffhangers.

One of my favorite ways to learn story structure is to match the story beats I see in a movie to those from Save the Cat Writes a Novel (and if you’re writing Young Adult novels, I highly recommend Save the Cat! Writes a Young Adult Novel, both of them by Jessica Brody. And for even more depth, check out Jessica’s courses at the Writing Mastery Academy).

By doing this analysis, you see how good storytelling is done, and gain some insights into how to implement the same techniques in your own novel. Try it next time you watch a movie. Write down each Save the Cat beat as you spot it and use it to improve your own story structure. Make sure to also note the plot twists you see, how they were skillfully done, and which beat they appeared in. Use that as a guide that shows you the perfect spots to add suspense and surprise in your own novel. The more movies you analyze like this, the more familiar you’ll become with story structure and the easier it will be for you to implement it in your own writing.

Writing Inspiration for Your Book Series

If you’re writing a series, then TV shows are your secret weapon. When writing a series, we want readers to buy the next book in the series. Then you need to make them really, really curious. That means having an awesome cliffhanger at the end of your book. If you want to master cliffhangers, pay close attention to how your favorite series end each season. The best ones leave you gasping, desperate to know what happens next, and you keep Googling the release date for the next season.

That’s me with Silo. I’m DYING to see the next season! That’s the reaction you want from your readers at the end of each book in your series. Except the last one, of course. Don’t leave them hanging because they’ll hate you for it.

Explore new ideas with genre hopping

We can absolutely level up our writing by studying stories in our own genre. But you can also learn a lot by exploring genres that are completely different from what you usually write. You never know which random movie might spark the idea for your next bestselling novel. Movies and TV shows aren’t just sources of entertainment and relaxation—they’re treasure troves of ideas waiting to inspire your next novel.

Incorporating elements from other genres in your novels

First, you can use elements from other genres in your own novels. Sometimes, just watching a movie outside your usual comfort zone can light up your creative brain.

Maybe you write sweet romance, but you just finished watching The Last Ship and can’t stop thinking about it and wish you could incorporate some of those aspects in your novel. You don’t have to suddenly turn your sweet romance story into a full-blown post-apocalyptic naval saga. And you certainly don’t need to wipe out eighty percent of the human population just to make the meet-cute more exciting. But what you could do is set your romance on a ship, with a hero who’s got the same rock-solid integrity as Tom Chandler, one of my favorite characters ever. Who knows, maybe I’ll write this story…

Besides inspiring memorable characters, watching movies and TV shows in other genres can also teach you about conflict, moral dilemmas, tension, romance, and even comedy. A bit of comedy is always welcome in any genre, and can defuse a super-tense scene. So go ahead—step outside your usual genre for a fresh perspective and new creative ideas for your novels.

Exploring new ideas with genre mashups

Second, the brave ones can even venture into the wild world of genre mashups. I know, I know—people say readers prefer one genre, and we’re told to “stick to our lane.” But if it’s something you’re truly passionate about, don’t let others’ narrow views extinguish your passion. It’s your story. You decide what to do with it, and you should have fun writing it.

If you usually write alien Sci-Fi but you’d love to mix in some historical romance, why not? Have your alien ship travel through time, land in the era you want to explore, and let your alien hero fall head-over-heels for a princess. Think of movies like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. If there are viewers who enjoy those kinds of movies, there are readers out there who will adore your genre mashup too.

Now that you know how you can get writing inspiration from movies and TV shows for your characters and plot, go ahead. Take a guilt-free break to binge-watch a few episodes of your favorite series. You’ll return to your manuscript with fresh ideas for creating more compelling characters, more intriguing plot twists, and even new, exciting scenarios for your future novels.

This post is all about the writing habits of famous authors and how they can inspire you to become a more productive and creative writer.

Have you ever wondered how Stephen King manages to write and publish so many incredibly long and successful bestselling novels? Wish you could do the same? It’s not magic—it’s discipline and cultivating the right habits. Today, dear happy writer, we’ll learn how to become more productive writers by studying the writing habits of famous authors. We’ll peek into the daily routines of prolific authors and uncover the secrets to their creativity, productivity, and enjoyable writing sessions.

Let the masters inspire you and teach you how to become a more productive writer.

Consistency from daily word count goals

We’re starting the journey into the writing habits of famous authors with my favorite author—Stephen King. I love his writing style and how he brilliantly portrays the complexities of human psychology in his many, many novels. But what’s his secret for being so incredibly productive?

Consistency!

With novels like The Stand, It, and Under the Dome (my favorite Stephen King book)—all longer than 1,000 pages—consistent writing is absolutely crucial. Such massive projects demand dedication, consistent work, and a commitment to keep going until you reach the finish line.

Stephen King writes 2000 words (or 6 pages) per day, every single day. He makes no exceptions, not even on Christmas Day or on his birthday. Here’s the perfect role model to follow if you want to have a successful writing career!

I’m not saying you have to write 2000 words a day. What I am saying is that it’s helpful to be consistent in your writing, even if you can only write 200 words a day. Just keep the momentum going so you can move closer to your goal of writing a book!

I know that compared to Stephen King, many writers have far less time to dedicate to writing. A full-time job, family commitments, or health concerns make it challenging to spend several hours per day writing. But maybe you can spare 15-30 minutes per day? These small writing sessions will compound over time, and bit by bit, day by day, your manuscript will grow into that full-length novel you’ve been dreaming of writing.

The key is showing up regularly.

Writing inspiration from a change in scenery

Who doesn’t love a nice, long, relaxing bath? It’s a great way to unwind and clear your mind after a stressful day. And you know what happens when you clear your mind? You make space for new ideas! That’s what helped Agatha Chriestie come up with the intricate plots of her novels. Agatha Chriestie often got new ideas for her novels from taking a bath or washing dishes. Both activities have a meditative effect on the mind, enhancing the flow of creative ideas.

Which is the weirdest place you’ve come up with ideas for your novel? Here are some more examples from other prolific authors:

From a hot bath to a bone-chilling graveyard—inspiration may strike at any moment, any place! Have you tried any of these locations? Hopefully not the prison… But the others seem like good places to visit for some inspiration for your novels. Off you go, and don’t forget your notebook!

Productivity from outlining like a master

Okay! I know this one is a bit controversial and that some pantsers have very strong opinions about plotting. But so do plotters, and they swear by it. It’s worth giving it a try, but ultimately, choose the path that feels right for you.

Here’s the fun thing about the internet—you can easily find out the daily routines and writing habits of famous authors. Read about their practices, learn what makes them successful, and then model them.

John Grisham is an extremely successful author of legal thrillers, captivating millions of readers worldwide with bestselling novels like The Firm, The Client, The Pelican Brief, and many others. I wouldn’t mind achieving even a fraction of his success!

John Grisham relies heavily on outlines to keep his story on track. In fact, he mentions he prepares comprehensive 40-50 page outlines to have a good idea of where the story is going before he even starts writing.

An outline of 40 or 50 pages! That’s a lot of advance preparation! But does it work? Considering how successful he is, I’d say yes… Many other successful authors also rely on outlines, using them to shape their books, either in the form of a detailed roadmap or a shorter summary containing the main plot points. Give it a shot and see if outlining works for you.

Efficiency from writing sprints

We’ve talked about writing sprints before, and we’ll talk about them again because they’re a fantastic tool in a writer’s arsenal. They significantly increase your writing efficiency, allowing you to write more quickly.

The English novelist, Anthony Trollope, used writing sprints as a key component to his writing process, his impressive list of publications being all the proof we need of just how effective writing sprints can be. His approach to writing sprints was simple, but highly effective—writing in 15-minute intervals, with a target word count of 250 words for each interval. He dedicated three hours a day to this process, so if you do the math, it adds up to an impressive 3000 words a day.

Talk about efficiency! Wouldn’t you love to be able to write 3000 words a day and have one novel written in one month? Of course, we’re not all able to write 250 words in 15 minutes, but maybe some of us, slower writers (even with the sprinting) can get 250 words in 30 minutes. That’s still progress!

Short, focused bursts of creativity allow us to fully immerse in our novel, enabling us to write as much as we possibly can at maximum speed during a short period of time. Writing sprints also reduce the pressure of having to write an entire novel, keeping us focused on this writing session. And then the next one, and the next one… until the entire book is written. So writing sprints are a key ingredient to becoming a more efficient writer, all while having fun sprinting through the pages.

Work ethic from discipline and daily routine

Some writers resist discipline, thinking that it’s too restrictive, but it’s actually a crucial component of the successful career of many creatives. Talent alone isn’t enough. Many leading artists and writers attribute their achievements to their self-imposed discipline of doing the work, no matter what.

Nora Roberts credits a significant portion of her remarkable success in the publishing world to her unshakable discipline and strong work ethic. Over her long writing career, Nora Roberts published nearly 250 books under two different pen names (Nora Roberts and J. D. Robb), publishing about four books a year. She essentially juggles two writing careers, so if you want to learn how to be an exceptionally prolific author, I’d say there’s no better role model.

How is Nora Roberts so prolific? She has the discipline to sit in front of her computer and write for six to eight hours every day. And she even finds some time to write when she’s on vacation. Now that’s dedication!

Nora Roberts’s work ethic is absolutely impressive, but I realize that it’s a level of commitment that not every writer can match. Writing for six to eight hours feels completely unattainable when you work a full-time job, have a family to take care of, the dogs are begging you to take them out for a walk, and you still have to sleep and take care of your health. And please do prioritize your health, because achieving anything else on the list depends on you being well and healthy.

How can we achieve success like Nora Roberts? That depends on your personal circumstances. If you’re a full-time author, you can definitely try Nora Roberts’ writing routine. Try to cultivate a daily writing habit of six to eight hours if you can focus for that long.

Even with a busy schedule, you can still strive for strong self-discipline, adapting Nora Roberts’ work ethic to your own life. Just one hour a day, every day, dedicated solely to writing and free from distractions, can have a huge impact on your progress. Consistency and dedication are key to a successful writing career. It’s up to you how you tailor them into your own schedule and make them work for you.

Focus from chaos

And now, let’s get back to the magical world of Harry Potter! It takes an incredible amount of imagination and focus to write such a fascinating wizarding world that makes you want to be part of it. So you’d think one would have to be locked away in solitary confinement to bring this world to life.

Turns out isolation isn’t a necessary component for crafting amazing stories. J. K. Rowling wrote the first three books in the Harry Potter series in bustling cafés, proving that you can focus and connect with your muse even in the most chaotic environments. She probably would have continued writing from cafés if fame hadn’t gotten in the way! With the Harry Potter books becoming famous and her fans recognizing her everywhere she went, writing from cafés became counterproductive, leading her to find quieter writing places.

We were talking earlier about the importance of being consistent for a successful writing career. In this day and age, distractions are practically everywhere, conspiring to interfere with our focused writing sessions. Finding a way to write—even with all the noise and distraction of a café—will help you stay consistent in your writing.

J. K. Rowling’s inspiring journey shows us that a writer’s success doesn’t come from finding the ideal, quiet environment for writing. It comes from cultivating the discipline to write effectively regardless of your surroundings, proving that the ability to write anywhere is paramount to success. If she was able to create an entire magical world in the middle of a noisy café, then surely we could also find the focus we need to create our own captivating worlds and characters.

In this post, we’ll explore ways in which nature can spark fresh ideas for your novel, clear your mind so you can be laser-focused during your writing session, and how playful activities in nature can boost your word count. Now grab your notebook, your walking shoes, and let’s see how the outdoors can elevate your writing process, awaken your senses, and help you write your next best-selling novel.

Gaining writing inspiration from nature

We often get stuck in a routine, doing the same thing day in and day out. And then we’re surprised we’re not in the mood to write because we’re just not getting any new ideas. There’s nothing new there to inspire a fresh perspective on your manuscript.

Our brains need novelty. The brain needs new stimuli to get inspired and to get those neurons working more efficiently.

Stepping out of your usual environment can provide the novelty your brain longs for. Nature is an especially favorable medium for this because no matter how much time you spend in nature, you can always find something new to admire.

I’m lucky enough to live close to a forest, and on every new walk I take, even if I use the same path as before, I always discover something new. For me, nature is like a goldmine of new ideas waiting to be discovered and turned into precious stories.

Nature can be particularly inspiring if you write fantasy. The moss-covered trees, the carpet of ferns covering the entire forest floor, and the towering trees reaching out to the sky create the perfect fantasy landscape. Walking through this enchanting scenery makes you think you’ve stepped into a fantasy world, with fairies and leprechauns about to come out and greet you. It’s impossible not to feel inspired when you’re out on an adventure through this magical landscape.

“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”–John Muir

Nature helps with “show, don’t tell”

How many times have you heard the most common writing advice, “Show, don’t tell!” There isn’t a course, book, or blog on writing that doesn’t mention it. Showing is an essential ingredient for high-quality prose.

As a scientist, I’m used to telling and explaining the facts as concisely as possible. So showing didn’t (or, better yet, still doesn’t) come easily to me. That’s why I’m happy to use any medium that helps me learn how to show.

Nature can skilfully teach us the art of showing, not telling. Moreover, nature teaches us how to show with all the senses. We sometimes show in our writing by explaining what we see and hear, but we forget there are other senses at our disposal: touch, smell, and taste.

The more senses you use, the more successful you will be in creating vivid descriptions that will immerse your reader deep into your world by engaging the reader’s mind on multiple levels. So, don’t hesitate to use all of them if you can. Nature can teach you how to do it.

Remember to take a notebook with you when you go on this sense-exploratory adventure. Take notes of everything you experience with all your senses. Here are some examples of how to use all the senses for showing:

sight: a lush carpet of moss and ferns stretching endlessly into the deep forest

sound: the harmonious forest symphony of cheerful bird chirping

touch: the rough texture of a tree bark ridged with tiny valleys and hills

smell: the crisp, clean air clearing up your airways with every breath

taste: the rich and damp earthly taste of the forest coating your tongue. Just to be on the safe side, I recommend imagining this one, and not actually tasting the dirt in the forest.

You might say that you don’t have nature in your novel to describe. You can still benefit from the exercise even if you’re writing a dystopian novel that takes place in a world where we’ve destroyed all the nature. But luckily, for now, we still have beautiful natural places that can help us improve the show, don’t tell by practicing describing what we see in nature.

Mindfulness in nature fuels writing

Are you stuck in your writing and unable to solve that plot hole no matter how many times you keep rereading what you wrote? Clearing your mind and making space for new ideas is what you need.

There’s nothing like a walk in nature to help you get rid of that mental clutter. It has a meditative effect and helps free your mind, helping you escape from the overthinking spiral you’ve been on. You’ll be able to look at your manuscript with a fresh pair of eyes and bring forth a new set of ideas that will save your plot.

The key to attaining this mental clarity during your nature walk is to be present, to be in the moment. That means not walking while looking down at your phone, checking what everybody is doing on social media, not talking on the phone, and sadly, not listening to an audiobook either. All these activities will take your focus away from the present moment, and you’ll miss out on everything nature is trying to show you. Do you find it too difficult to resist temptation? Try leaving your phone at home so you can be fully present and experience everything nature has to offer.

Look around you! Do you see that leaf that’s just starting to change color as the fall begins to settle, the moss hanging down a tree like spiderwebs, the tree crowns stretching far above your head? Observe nature as it is “Right here and now!” That’s a quote from Wolf, a character from The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Wehenver I feel my mind wandering, I repeat to myself Wolf’s advice, and my mind immediately snaps back to reality. It works like a charm every time!

I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in having my mind wander instead of observing what’s right in front of me. As a writer, I bet you know exactly what I’m talking about. We’re so caught up in our imagination, we sometimes forget about the real world. But sometimes, it’s the real-world experiences that can provide the best ideas for your novel. So keep Wolf’s advice in mind.

“Right here and now!”—Wolf from The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub

Writing inspiration from nature’s metaphors

Freeing your mind to make space for fresh thoughts is wonderful, and nature makes that possible. But nature offers so much more than that! It’s the ultimate source of metaphors, helping you level up your writing by providing a never-ending supply of ingenious comparisons!

There’s a wealth of metaphors you can find in nature if you just take the time to observe and reflect on what you see. There are lessons on perseverance, adaptability, and starting over—you just have to open your eyes and let nature be your writing guide.

Lessons on perseverance from nature

Your job as an author is to make your hero’s life a living nightmare, filling his path with as many obstacles and challenges as you can think of. The whole point of a hero’s journey is for him to learn how to persevere, find his way out of the mess you put him in, and emerge as the hero he’s destined to be.

You need inspiration on how to help your hero persevere? Let nature guide you.

Consider how resilient trees are as the seasons change. Summer or winter, thunderstorm or drought, extreme heat or freezing temperatures—no matter the conditions, they persevere, growing taller, stronger, and more impressive with each passing season.

You want to teach your heroine patience and perseverance? The persistent flow of a river slowly carving its way through rock perfectly symbolizes how small, consistent efforts can conquer any obstacle, a valuable lesson for your heroine.

Lessons on adaptability from nature

As your heroine leaves the familiar Act I world and steps into the Act II world, a world very different from her own, she needs to learn to adapt to the new conditions. Both flora and fauna offer valuable examples of how to adapt and thrive in new circumstances.

Chameleons, leaf butterflies, and dragon lizards have learned how to use camouflage to blend in with the environment and hide from their enemies. What resources can offer your hero to help him blend in with their new environment and hide from her enemies?

Similarly, plants demonstrate remarkable adaptability to harsh conditions. Cacti, for example, survive in the extreme environment of the desert by quickly absorbing water through their shallow, wide roots in the event of a rain and using their thick, fleshy stems to store that water for long periods of time. If a cactus can even survive under my “expert care”, going for months forgotten, without a drop of water, that just shows you how incredibly adaptable they are. And your hero needs to be just as resourceful if he’s to survive in the new world.

Lessons from nature on starting over

I love butterflies, which I’m sure you’ve already realized by now if you’ve looked around my website. Don’t you think butterflies perfectly symbolize rebirth and self-improvement? They evolve from a modest caterpillar into a stunning, magnificently colored butterfly—a true reinvention of oneself to start over as a better version of oneself.

Isn’t that exactly what your heroine needs to do as she overcomes all the challenges you’ve set for her? Her journey in an unfamiliar world is filled with hardship, experiencing painful losses that challenge her identity. But these challenges, while difficult to endure, are what help her emerge as a stronger, more resilient version of herself, ready to start over with renewed purpose and courage.

Playfulness boosts productivity

Have you ever watched Miranda, the British TV comedy series? I feel like I connect so well with the character for two main reasons. First, she’s just as clumsy as I am and gets herself into as many embarrassing social situations as I do. Such fun! But above all, she takes things lightly, finding a playful approach to life. I think we benefit from modeling Miranda by learning how to infuse playfulness into our work and lives. Nature is the perfect place to reconnect with our inner child and rediscover our sense of playfulness.

Playful activities in nature can lift your mood, give you energy, and make you more excited about all the new ideas that flooded your brain during your walk. They will simply make you a happier, more productive writer.

What are some playful activities you could try? Let’s start with our little winged friends—the birds. There are multiple studies that show how listening to birdsong can improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood and focus. But how about adding some playfulness to that? When you listen to the birds’ song, try to imitate them. Did it sound anything like what you had heard? Did the bird answer back? If not, keep working on it. Even if the bird doesn’t reply, at least you’re having a good laugh.

Have you ever tried galloping instead of walking on the forest trail? For reference, here’s Miranda teaching you how to gallop. Are you embarrassed to do it when there are others around? Try it when you’re alone on the trail. Seriously! Try it and prepare yourself for immediate stress relief and uncontrollable laughter.

Studies have shown that laughter can activate various brain regions associated with creativity, boosting creativity and increasing well-being. With this added creativity boost, wouldn’t you be able to come up with even better ideas for your novel? I believe playfulness is just what we need to become more productive and happier writers.

Dear happy writer, now go out and get some writing inspiration from nature. And remember to stay playful and have fun on your writing journey!

Book ideas from observing the world

The world can be a great source of inspiration for your novel. By becoming a keen observer of the people you meet and the places you visit, and taking a minute to reflect on the events you’ve experienced in your life, you’re practically set for life. Ideas will come flooding into your brain. You just have to pay attention.

Characters based on real-world people

Think about that annoying colleague of yours who belittles you on every occasion, or the selfless friend who is always there for everyone, no matter what. How about that adventurous friend of yours who travels all over the world and is fearlessly experiencing all the world has to offer? Could they be a source of inspiration for your characters? Of course they can!

If you’re thinking that you can’t describe a character exactly like the irritating guy from your office because they would know you’re talking about them, you’re right. And it would probably make your work environment a bit uncomfortable… But you can still use them as a source of inspiration for your character. You don’t have to give them the exact same traits. They can be similar ones. Just make sure you don’t use their name. That would make it pretty obvious…

You know what I like about creating fictional characters? I’m in charge of what happens to them. So, both the good guys and the bad guys get the ending they truly deserve. At least in the fictional world… This is one of the reasons I love Stephen King’s books so much—people always get what they deserve in the end.

Settings based on real-world places

You can get inspiration for your settings from something as small as the coffee shop you regularly visit or as grand as the Grand Canyon or as remote as the Island of Rapa Nui. Take a good look at the places you visit, observe the little details, take notes and use them as the basis of your settings. Do you like the floral motifs used to decorate your favorite cafe? Use that and add your own spin to it. If you like it, your readers will probably like it, too.

Have you ever taken a trip to one of our world’s most breathtaking natural wonders? If you did, it’s very likely you will remember even the smallest details many years later. Don’t let these incredible memories fade away. Capture them into words, and give others the chance to enjoy those locations through your beautifully crafted prose. Let your stories bring those places to life!

Using Google Maps for Your Writing Research

Are you worried because you haven’t traveled anywhere outside your hometown? Do not worry, dear happy writer, I’ve got you covered. Or, more accurately, Google Maps has you covered.

The level of detail you can uncover with Google Maps of any location is absolutely incredible. You can explore remote areas and take virtual road trips, all from the comfort of your home. Does it match the experience of being there in person? No, but it’s still a fantastic tool for research and can take you exactly where your story needs to go. Not to mention it’s a lot cheaper than going there in person!

A few years ago, I went on my dream trip to the island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). I had dreamt of visiting the island and seeing the famous moai statues ever since I was a child. It was the best holiday of my life, and the island, with all of its fascinating history and culture, became the inspiration for my first novel.

Book ideas from history and mythology

History and myths are treasure troves of ideas. Many famous novels are based on historical events. Some examples include Gone with the Wind (Margaret Mitchell), Pompeii (Robert Harris), I was Anastasia (Ariel Lawhon), and The Accidental Empress (Allison Pataki), each bringing historical events and characters to life from a fresh perspective—proof that history is a goldmine for storytelling!

You don’t enjoy reading history, but prefer myths and legends instead? No problem! There are lots of interesting fantasy novels rooted in myths and legends.

How about retelling your favorite myth from a different perspective? Give it a spin to fit your own view of the events, or how you wished it had happened.

Reimagine the popular myths and legends the way you’ve always wished they had happened. You could tweak the personalities of your main characters or place them in a completely different setting. You can even magically transport them to the modern world and see how they react in such an unfamiliar environment. Or maybe they’ve been living in the modern world all along, and you’re retelling the legend with a fresh, contemporary twist.

The possibilities are endless—transform these timeless tales and share your own version with the world!

Playful “what if” questions

What if your puppy turned into a superhero who fought villains at night? What if every time you got out of the metro at a stop, you entered an alternate universe? What if you woke up one day and everyone around you was replaced by a robot that looked exactly like them?

This is such a fun game to play! There are countless “what if” scenarios that you can come up with. All of them could be the plot of your next best-selling novel. And it’s guaranteed to never run out of ideas. Just keep imagining “what if” and make it fun. Try to make the scenarios as ridiculous and strange as possible. Experiment with the craziest ideas and see which one sparks the most excitement for you. You’ve probably just found the topic of your next novel.

I think that Neil Gaiman is a brilliant author who excels at this game. I love the worlds and characters he creates in his stories by imagining “what if” and letting that weird scenario play out.
Now it’s your turn. Let me know in the comments the most fun “what if” you came up with. And then start writing the story.

How to get book ideas from past experiences

Your life is way more interesting than you think. We sometimes think we live boring lives, but if we take a closer look at the events of our lives, there’s plenty of material there to write a few books.

I’m not saying you’re going to write a Harry Potter book based on your school years. But who knows, maybe you do live in a secret wizarding world and went to a school for wizards. How cool would that be?!

Even the rest of us, muggles as we are, we can also find inspiration from our own experiences.

Think of the happiest day of your life. What led to achieving that happiness? Can you take the lessons you learned along the way, add some fictional elements, and transform your own journey into a hero’s journey? After all, you are the hero of your epic story.

By analyzing the highs and lows of your life, sprinkling in a little imagination and a few “what ifs”, you can transform it into a fascinating story of friendship, survival, romance, or even comedy. It all depends on the perspective from which you chose to view and tell your story. Your life isn’t just a series of events—it’s a goldmine of inspiration waiting for you to share all that beauty with the world!

Book inspiration from other stories

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations.” — Mark Twain

You have this idea about a boy who discovers he’s a wizard, and it’s so exciting! You want to tell his story as he gets acquainted with this new world, the friendships he forms, and all the lessons he learns along the way. But then you do a bit of research and realize the story has already been told, and it’s one of the best-selling books of all time. So what do you do then? Give up because someone already wrote that story? NO!

The story hasn’t been told from your perspective, using your views on life and your added imagination. Your upcoming wizard doesn’t have to play quidditch, take potions classes, or fight Voldemort. Your own wizarding world is bursting with possibilities—countless adventures to embark on, lessons to master, and enemies to fight. Explore all the options, unleash your imagination and craft a fantasy story of your own.

Just because an idea for the book is similar to another book, movie, or TV show, it doesn’t mean the story will be the same. Of course, you shouldn’t copy the idea and write something that is almost identical to the original one. That’s plagiarism, and it’s a big NO-NO! Instead, craft a story that’s uniquely yours—infuse it with your own twist, create a world brimming with wonder, and bring characters to life that you’re excited to share with your readers.

Be authentic. Be yourself and bring your own ideas, quirks, and worldviews into your story. Make it a story worth telling!

Book ideas based on your dreams

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I have hilarious dreams at night. In fact, they’re so funny that I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, laughing out loud because of the ridiculous dreams I just had! So if I ever want to add comedy to my books, I have plenty of ideas to use.

It doesn’t have to be funny dreams, though. It can be any dream you’ve had that you stuck with you. In dreams, we find ourselves visiting new worlds, doing things we normally wouldn’t have the courage to do in real life, and interacting with fascinating people (and even animals).

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night thinking, “This dream would be a good idea for my next novel.” But by the time you wake up in the morning, you just can’t remember what it was? Keeping a notepad and a pen on your nightstand might solve this issue. When you have a dream that’s worth remembering, take your notepad and quickly write down the main idea. You’ll be so happy when you wake up in the morning and find there, right next to you, the idea for your next brilliant novel.
