<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how exercising helps you become more creative so you can feel more inspired and bring your ideas to life through your writing.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’ve ever sat down to write feeling uninspired, exhausted, and like your brain has simply stopped working, you’re not alone. In those moments, you feel like the harder you try, the further your creativity slips away. And then you start worrying that your muse has abandoned you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t worry, dear happy writer. The creative spirit within you is not gone. You just need a little boost in energy to access it again.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative-683x1024.png" alt="How Does Exercising Help You Become More Creative as a Writer" class="wp-image-5817" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-Does-Exercising-Help-You-Become-More-Creative.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, we’re going to see how exercising boosts your energy, helps you feel more focused and inspired to come up with better story ideas, and boosts your mood to bring back your joy of writing. And if you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how exercising helps writers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe title="How Does Exercising Help You Become More Creative as a Writer?" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/eWm98Ptz_8I?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exercise unlocks your creativity by increasing your energy</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your writing session is about to begin. You sit down at your desk, open your laptop, and get ready to write. But then… you find yourself staring at the screen, barely able to keep your eyes open, and your mind feels completely blank. Sound familiar?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem might not be your imagination. It might simply be your lack of energy. And today, we&#8217;ll see how engaging in regular physical activity can boost your overall energy levels.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But first, there’s a very important point I want to address. If that lack of energy comes from health issues, burnout, or from missing too many nights of sleep, then the most important thing you can do is rest. You first need to make up for that lost sleep and get your health back on track.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I always say, health comes first. And I learned that the hard way. So trust me on this: rest, take care of yourself, and then come back to your writing with a refreshed mind. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors-683x1024.png" alt="Rest is sometimes one of the best writing tips for authors" class="wp-image-5831" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Rest-is-sometimes-the-best-writing-tip-for-authors.png 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But if you’re generally well-rested and in good health, yet you still feel tired and uninspired when you sit down to write, then what you might need is an energy boost. And exercise is one of the best ways to get it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you exercise, <a href="https://www.vailhealth.org/news/how-exercise-can-help-combat-fatigue" type="link" id="https://www.vailhealth.org/news/how-exercise-can-help-combat-fatigue" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">you increase your blood flow</a>, which means more oxygen reaches your body and most importantly, your brain. This helps wake you up, boosts your energy, and improves your focus. And when your focus improves, something magical happens… your ideas start coming back to you. They flow more easily, connect better, and begin to make more sense.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After moving your body, you’ll find it easier to make connections between ideas and tap into your imagination more fully.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And don’t worry, dear Happy Writer. Exercise doesn’t mean intense workouts or spending hours at the gym. Even a short walk can wake you up and give you that boost of energy you need. And the benefits of the walk are even more powerful if you can take that walk in nature.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How a Walk in Nature Can Inspire Your Writing</a></mark></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas-683x1024.png" alt="Exercise More to Get More Book Ideas" class="wp-image-5833" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Exercise-More-to-Get-More-Book-Ideas.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exercise reduces the overthinking that blocks your creativity</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, the lack of progress in your manuscript isn’t because you’re tired and need more energy. It’s because you’re overthinking everything.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re stuck on a problem in your story, and no matter how much you think about it, you just can’t solve it. You keep turning it around in your head, looking at it from every angle… and still, no solution appears. At least, none that you can see right now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is another moment where exercise can truly help writers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only does it increase the oxygen flow to your brain, helping you come up with more creative solutions, but it also gives you something just as valuable: distance from the problem.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’ve talked before about how writers get their best ideas while doing simple, everyday activities like washing dishes or taking a bath. That’s because those moments help clear your mind and allow your creativity to flow more freely.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind-683x1024.png" alt="Get book ideas when you clear your mind" class="wp-image-5830" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Get-book-ideas-when-you-clear-your-mind.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Writing Habits of Prolific Authors</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Exercise works in a very similar way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you move your body, your attention shifts to what you’re doing—the rhythm of your steps, your breathing, your movement. And in doing that, you start releasing some of the pressure you were putting on your creativity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re no longer trying to force the answer. You’re giving your mind space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s often when the solutions to your plot problems start showing up.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity-683x1024.png" alt="Writing a book is easier when you are not forcing your creativity" class="wp-image-5832" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Writing-a-book-is-easier-when-you-are-not-forcing-your-creativity.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The less pressure you put on your muse, the more freedom she has to guide you. Instead of trying to control your creativity, you allow it to flow. And that’s when it can lead you exactly where you need to go next with your story.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book-683x1024.png" alt="Creative flow when writing a book" class="wp-image-5828" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Creative-flow-when-writing-a-book.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you feel stuck in your writing, do you usually try to push through… or take a nap&#8230; or move a little? Which of these did you find worked best for you?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exercise improves your focus so you can stay creative for longer</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being a writer isn’t just about having lots of ideas for your novels. It’s also about being able to focus on those ideas for longer periods of time, and shaping them into something that makes sense and keeps your reader engaged.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All of that requires a lot of focus. And this is another place where exercise can make a big difference.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Regular exercise helps improve your attention span and allows you to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdb35NoCeUU" type="link" id="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdb35NoCeUU" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stay focused for longer</a>. That means you can enjoy longer, more productive writing sessions, where you’re fully immersed in your story world. And when you stay in that creative space for longer, it becomes much easier to connect your ideas and solve plot problems that may have felt impossible before.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Better focus is especially helpful if you’re writing with a busy schedule.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have a full-time job or other commitments that limit your writing time, being able to focus deeply is crucial. When you only have half an hour to work on your manuscript, stronger focus helps you make the most of that time. You’ll be able to write more, think more clearly, and move your story forward—even in a short session.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that’s such a powerful shift, dear Happy Writer—because it means you don’t need more time to write… you just need to make the time you already have work better for you.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time-683x1024.png" alt="How to write a book when you dont have time" class="wp-image-5829" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/How-to-write-a-book-when-you-dont-have-time.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-a-book-with-a-full-time-job/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-a-book-with-a-full-time-job/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How to Write a Book While Working a Full-Time Job</a></mark></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exercise boosts your mood and your creative confidence</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another great benefit of exercising is that it reduces your stress levels.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you exercise, your brain releases a <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/exercise-and-stress/art-20044469" type="link" id="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/exercise-and-stress/art-20044469" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&#8220;feel-good&#8221; neurochemical called beta-endorphin</a>, boosting your happiness and lifting your mood. And when you&#8217;re in a good mood, everything about writing feels better too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With less stress and a more positive mindset, writing becomes fun again instead of something you have to push through. You feel lighter, more open, and more willing to explore new ideas.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That positive mental state also strengthens your creative confidence. It helps you quiet self-doubt, move past writer’s block, and give yourself permission to create something new and exciting.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block-683x1024.png" alt="How does exercising help you become more creative? By inducing a positive mindset that helps overcome writer's block" class="wp-image-5827" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/A-positive-mindset-helps-overcome-writers-block.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And when you’re in a better mood, both you and your readers benefit because that joy and energy naturally show up in your writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So if you want to be a happy writer… moving your body more might just be one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember, it doesn’t have to be anything intense or extreme. Even a short walk or a relaxing yoga session can help you shake off that slump and reconnect with your creativity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, a little movement is all it takes to get your ideas flowing again.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how to rekindle your passion for a stalled book project so you can start making progress on your book again.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your stalled book project is not dead, and in this post, I&#8217;m going to share with you how you can bring it back to life. I’ll show you how to reignite your excitement, rebuild your momentum, and fall back in love with your manuscript without feeling stressed and overwhelmed. </p>

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your manuscript is still alive and waiting for your return, dear happy writer. It&#8217;s waiting for you to come back to it with fresh energy and a playful heart.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are the six steps to take to rekindle your passion for a stalled book project. And if you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how to get excited about your book again.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="How to Rekindle Passion for a Stalled Book Project and Fall in Love With Your Manuscript Again" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/E75VrbNcSa4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Why your stalled book project isn’t a failure</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s been weeks, months, or maybe even years since you last looked at your manuscript. And the more time passes, the harder it feels to get back to it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it&#8217;s time to open your manuscript again. Because the longer you let it sit, the more you start wondering if you can actually write this book. But you can! You just have to reconnect with the love you had for your book project at the beginning. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Focus on that feeling and not on how much time has passed since you last worked on it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Life happens. We all have situations that pull us away from our manuscripts. Maybe you moved to a new country, changed jobs, dealt with a health crisis, had a baby, or simply went through a period where your focus and energy needed to go elsewhere. And that&#8217;s okay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So don&#8217;t think that you have failed on your book project just because you haven&#8217;t touched it in a while. You&#8217;re not a failure, you&#8217;ve just had other priorities. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You didn&#8217;t give up on your dream. You simply paused it. And now it&#8217;s time to unpause it and reignite that love for your stalled book project.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Reconnect with the heart of your story</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first thing to do when returning to a stalled book project is to reconnect with the passion you had for it in the beginning. Remember why you started writing in the first place. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Why was this story important to you? What sparked that very first idea? Was it the plot that made you excited to sit down and write? Was it the characters that you loved and you absolutely had to spend more time with in the pages of your book? Or were you excited about the world-building, creating a world so vivid and exciting that anyone would want to step into it? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whatever it was, focus on that. Focus on how excited you were to create that world and join your characters on all the adventures you envisioned for them. Let yourself feel that spark again. Once you remember why you started writing, the next step becomes so much easier: remembering what you&#8217;ve already created.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story-683x1024.png" alt="How to rekindle a stalled book project - get excited about your story" class="wp-image-5796" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-rekindle-a-stalled-book-project-get-excited-about-your-story.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. How to reread your manuscript without crushing your confidence</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you reread your manuscript after a long time, it&#8217;s like seeing it with a completely new pair of eyes. You&#8217;ve accumulated a new set of experiences during the time you were away from your manuscript. Maybe you no longer agree with some of the things you wrote. Maybe you now have a whole new set of ideas of how the story could continue. Or maybe you&#8217;re even considering taking it in a completely new direction. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whatever it is, it&#8217;s crucial to keep one thing in mind: <strong>do not criticize yourself for what you wrote</strong>. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you hadn&#8217;t written that version, you wouldn&#8217;t be here today with new ideas, a new perspective, and new creative energy. Now you get to build on it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can change what&#8217;s not working and shape the story into something even better, based on everything you’ve learned in the meantime. So when you reread your stalled book, don&#8217;t read it like an editor. Read it like a curious reader who genuinely wants to know what happens next. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That way, instead of criticizing what you wrote, you are more open to new ideas as you remember the story and start imagining how to move forward. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make sure to take notes as you read. Write down the main ideas, what worked, what you need to change, to add, and what to remove. These notes will become your roadmap for the next step, where you actually have to get back to writing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Shrink your stalled book project into smaller pieces</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coming back to a stalled book project might feel overwhelming. You suddenly feel so behind, and it seems like there&#8217;s so much to do, you don&#8217;t even know where to start. Don&#8217;t let that overwhelm take over and stop you from getting back to your manuscript. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I think that&#8217;s one of the main reasons we find it so difficult to return to a book project we&#8217;ve put on hold for a long time. It&#8217;s suddenly so much to do. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here&#8217;s the good news: you don&#8217;t have to do it all at once. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start with baby steps. You don&#8217;t have to finish the book in one session. You can choose to write 100 or 200 words per day. The goal at this stage isn’t to do everything. It’s to get back into the habit of writing your manuscript. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing-683x1024.png" alt="Your stalled book project is waiting for you to get back to writing" class="wp-image-5794" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Your-stalled-book-project-is-waiting-for-you-to-get-back-to-writing.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can always increase your word count later. What matters right now is showing up and making progress, no matter how small it is. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And this is where the notes from <em>step 3</em> will really help you because now you already have a clear idea of what you want to write next. But when you start writing, there&#8217;s another obstacle you have to overcome: your desire to make it perfect from the start.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Overcome the perfectionism that stalled your book project</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;ve already done a lot of work to get back to your stalled book project. You reconnected with your passion for your story, reread it and know what needs to stay and what needs to go, and you&#8217;ve started writing again. Great job!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But now there&#8217;s another obstacle in your way: YOU! You want everything you write to be perfect. Now that you&#8217;ve started writing again, you can&#8217;t be writing something that&#8217;s not good. It needs to be perfect as soon as you write it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you focus on making everything perfect from the start, it becomes much harder to keep going. So focus first on writing your story. Your first draft doesn&#8217;t have to be perfect. It has to be written. Once you have the full story written, you can then switch to editing mode and polish your manuscript until it shines. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1500" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect.png" alt="Write your first draft without trying to make it perfect" class="wp-image-5788" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect.png 1000w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Write-your-first-draft-without-trying-to-make-it-perfect-800x1200.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And just like that, step by step, word by word, your stalled book project starts to come back to life. And if you follow these steps, you’ll not only reignite your manuscript, you’ll build momentum again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But there’s one more powerful step you can add to help you keep going. And that is to&#8230;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Visualize the finished version of your stalled book project</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There will be moments when writing feels slower, new ideas are harder to grasp, and worries start to creep in again. And that&#8217;s completely normal.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In those moments, besides reconnecting with your original passion for your project, it&#8217;s also useful to visualize the finish line. Picture yourself holding your published book in your hands. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How exciting is it to see all that hard work finally pay off! To see your story out in the world!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visualizing your dream coming true will give you that extra push you need to keep writing, especially during difficult moments. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But, as I always say, it&#8217;s just as important to enjoy the journey, not only the destination. So as you keep going, don’t focus only on that one big moment. Look for ways to make the entire writing process more fun. Find small moments of joy in your writing sessions. Because when you enjoy the writing process, you’re much more likely to keep showing up… and actually finish your book.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BONUS STEP — It&#8217;s okay to abandon a stalled book project</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wait, what? You just told me how to rekindle the passion for an old project, and now you&#8217;re saying I should abandon it? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not quite&#8230; What I am saying is this: After going through these steps, you might actually realize that you no longer feel the same way about that story as you did before. And that&#8217;s okay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe you&#8217;re ready to get back into writing, but not <em>that</em> story. Maybe your creativity is pulling you in a completely different direction. If that&#8217;s the case, it&#8217;s important to know that you don&#8217;t have to force yourself to get back to a project you no longer feel excited about. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This actually happened to me. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first book I wrote was a YA sci-fi space adventure, and I even planned a whole series. Then I wrote a sweet romance novel—something completely different—and I loved both of them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But after taking a break from writing, when I came back, I noticed something interesting… My mind kept going back to the romance story. I love the characters I created for my romance series, and I simply have to tell their stories. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So instead of forcing myself to return to the sci-fi project, I&#8217;m choosing to put it on a longer pause so I can focus on the stories that are currently most important to me. I&#8217;m not abandoning sci-fi completely. I&#8217;m just giving myself permission to follow what feels right in this moment. And I’m happy with this decision because this is where my heart is right now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The key takeaway here is this: <strong>Make sure your decision is coming from clarity, not from fear.</strong> Make sure that you’re not avoiding your project because it feels hard. You’re choosing what you genuinely want to write next. Because sometimes, moving forward means continuing your story… And sometimes, it means choosing a new one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about how to rekindle your passion for a stalled book project. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how to find writing inspiration in your everyday life so you&#8217;re always inspired and never run out of ideas for your novels.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing inspiration isn’t hiding somewhere far away. It’s already built into your everyday life—you just have to learn how to notice all those story ideas floating all around you.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere-683x1024.png" alt="How to Find Writing Inspiration in Your Everyday Life - Find Story Ideas Everywhere" class="wp-image-5758" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Find-Writing-Inspiration-in-Your-Everyday-Life-Find-Story-Ideas-Everywhere.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can find story ideas everywhere you look. Writing inspiration can come from a walk in your neighbourhood, from paying attention to the people walking past you on the street or sitting next to you on your commute, or even from a chat you had five minutes ago.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, dear happy writer, I’ll show you how to find writing inspiration in your everyday life and how to turn your day into a treasure hunt for book ideas. If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how to find writing inspiration in your everyday life.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to find writing inspiration from a walk in your neighbourhood</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the easiest and most fun ways to find writing inspiration when you feel stuck is to go for a walk in your neighbourhood. But for this to really work, try leaving the audiobook at home. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, pay close attention to everything you see: the streets, the houses, the gardens, the pets. Your neighbourhood is full of creative inspiration just waiting to be noticed. Be present. Be curious. And let your imagination take the lead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of my favorite games to play when I&#8217;m out for a walk is to come up with stories about the people who live in the houses I pass by. Each house has its own unique charm. That means it also has its own unique story. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#8217;s the house with the big, beautifully maintained garden, full of flowers of every color. That&#8217;s very different from the house with the broken fence and lawn that hasn&#8217;t been mowed in months. Who lives in these houses? What are their stories?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those tiny sparks of curiosity can turn into characters, settings, and story ideas. And before you know it, your quiet neighbourhood walk might just become the starting point of your next novel.</p>

<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life-683x1024.png" alt="How to find writing inspiration and story ideas from your everyday life" class="wp-image-5763" style="aspect-ratio:0.6669923465233676;width:320px;height:auto" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-is-built-into-your-everyday-life.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to find writing inspiration during your daily commute</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your commute can actually become your quiet, creative time. It&#8217;s the time of day when you don’t have to answer work emails or phone calls, run after the kids or the dogs, or think about house chores. You can use your commute to focus on your novel. This time is especially useful when you&#8217;re trying to write a novel while working a full-time job.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-a-book-with-a-full-time-job/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-a-book-with-a-full-time-job/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How to Write a Book With a Full-Time Job</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One way to use your commute time to work on your novel is to actually write in your novel. But you might be too tired, or you&#8217;re driving and can&#8217;t type, and you&#8217;re not a fan of dictation. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But don&#8217;t worry, dear happy writer. The commute time is not wasted time. You can still use this time productively. Use it for a novel idea brainstorming session.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your commute can inspire both the settings and the characters in your novels. Just like with a walk in your neighbourhood, the commute offers endless ideas for locations in your novels. Pay attention to the buildings, the streets, the parks, and other landmarks you pass by. Observing your environment can help you with your world-building, inspire new settings, or even spark ideas for entire scenes.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment-683x1024.png" alt="World-building inspiration for your novel from your environment" class="wp-image-5761" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/World-building-inspiration-for-your-novel-from-your-environment.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then there are the people. The people you see on your commute can spark ideas for your characters. You can imagine stories about them: who they are, where they’re going, what they’re feeling. Or if you use public transport, why not start a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Discover their backstory directly from them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you’re more on the introverted side, no problem at all. You can let your imagination do the work and create their backstory just by observing them. Either way, when you reach your destination, you&#8217;ll have some fresh ideas for your characters.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to find writing inspiration by observing people</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s continue with the people-watching habit we started in the previous point. Pople watching isn&#8217;t limited to your commute. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can observe people in different environments: at work, at the coffee shop, in the restaurant, at the gym. Everywhere you go, you&#8217;re surrounded by people. Use them as a source of creative inspiration for your characters.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start by simply observing. What does their body language tell you? Can you guess how they feel just by looking at them? Notice how people walk, how they talk, how they dress, and how they interact with those around them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, based on what you&#8217;ve observed, start creating their background stories. And if you want to have some fun with this, try imagining some funny scenarios involving the people you see. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like, you see a very serious person sitting in the coffee shop reading a newspaper. Based on his concerned facial expression, you think he&#8217;s reading the news and it&#8217;s all bad. But when he puts down the newspaper, you see he was actually looking at an ad for a course on how to become a clown. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now there&#8217;s an interesting backstory to create for this person. Play with that and see what kind of funny backstories you can come up with for the people you see.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Finding story ideas by watching the news</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Real-world events are rich with drama and conflict, and they can provide an endless supply of ideas for your stories. The news provides inspiration for interesting settings, intriguing plotlines, and memorable characters. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news-683x1024.png" alt="How to find writing inspiration from the news and real-world events" class="wp-image-5762" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Writing-inspiration-from-the-news.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When watching the news, don&#8217;t just focus on what&#8217;s being reported. Ask yourself what will happen next. What are the long-term consequences of that event? How would your fictional characters react if they were placed in that situation?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But don&#8217;t stop at just one news event. To make things even more interesting, try combining several events from the news into one story idea. Or bring together the characters from different news stories. And place them in a completely new environment. Then let your imagination lead the way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you&#8217;re writing sci-fi novels, then keeping up to date with scientific news can be very helpful. Read about the new technologies being developed. Explore &#8220;what if&#8221; scenarios starting from recent scientific advancements. And use them to create conflict, tension, and lots of challenges for your characters. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The possibilities are truly endless, and your next story idea might already be in today’s headlines.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas-683x1024.png" alt="How to Find Writing Inspiration - How to Turn Ordinary Life into Story Ideas" class="wp-image-5765" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Turn-Ordinary-Life-into-Story-Ideas.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to find writing inspiration from everyday conversations</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;ve talked about getting writing inspiration from conversations before, when we talked about the benefits of writing in a cafe. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/book-writing-in-a-cafe-productivity/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/book-writing-in-a-cafe-productivity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How Writing in a Café Helps You Be a More Creative and Productive Writer</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Listening to little snippets of other people&#8217;s conversations can spark all kinds of ideas for your novels. They can provide ideas for a short dialogue, for character backstory, for an interesting scene, or even the entire plot of a novel. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People are very interesting. So be curious to learn from them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you&#8217;re starting a conversation with a stranger or chatting to a coworker, a friend, or even a family member, there&#8217;s always something interesting to discover about them. You just have to be genuinely curious to learn more about them and ask the right questions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Questions like &#8220;How are you?&#8221; and &#8220;What&#8217;s new? &#8221; most often won&#8217;t lead to deep insight. Boring questions will always lead to boring answers. But when you ask more profound questions and really listen to the answers, you’ll realize something beautiful: every single person has at least one interesting story to tell and inspire you.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look-683x1024.png" alt="You can find story ideas everywhere you look" class="wp-image-5764" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/You-can-find-story-ideas-everywhere-you-look.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Turning mundane routines into creative inspiration</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This point isn&#8217;t about how to get writing inspiration <em>from</em> the routine itself. It&#8217;s more about how these everyday tasks help ideas flow more freely. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just think about how many story ideas come to you in the shower. It&#8217;s not a coincidence. It&#8217;s because you&#8217;re not trying to force them. You&#8217;re relaxed, your mind is wandering, and your imagination finally has space to play.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it&#8217;s not just the shower. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we talked about the writing habits of prolific authors, we saw that Agatha Christie often got her ideas while taking a bath, but also while doing simple things like washing the dishes. These quiet, repetitive routines reduce the pressure of “trying to come up with ideas” and allow your creativity to move more naturally.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Learning from the Writing Habits of Famous Authors</a></mark></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines-683x1024.png" alt="Creativity boost from repetitive routines" class="wp-image-5760" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Creativity-boost-from-repetitive-routines.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So use that time like a creative meditation. Let your mind wander and follow the ideas wherever they go. Don’t try to control the thought, just observe them. Maybe they will lead you to your next best-selling novel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about how to find writing inspiration in your everyday life. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how to write faster without burning out and enjoying your writing sessions while still being a productive writer.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing faster doesn&#8217;t mean pushing yourself to the limit, sacrificing sleep, or exhausting yourself while chasing impossible word count goals. And yet, that’s exactly what so many writers are doing, then wondering why they&#8217;re so exhausted all the time.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers-683x1024.png" alt="How to Write Faster without Burning Out - 5 Tips for Writers" class="wp-image-5736" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-Write-Faster-without-Burning-Out-5-Tips-for-Writers.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, dear Happy Writer, I’m sharing with you five tips on how to write faster without burning out and without turning writing into another source of stress. These are fun strategies that help you write faster and write more while protecting your energy, your creativity, and your love for writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s see how to write faster while keeping writing fun and enjoying the writing journey. If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how to write faster without burning out.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #1: Write faster using the Pomodoro Technique</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best ways I&#8217;ve found to write faster is by using the Pomodoro Technique. The Pomodoro Technique is all about writing in short, focused writing sprints, followed by short breaks in between.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, you can write for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. After every four writing sprints, you can reward yourself with a longer break, usually around 20-minutes. The best part is that you can adjust both the duration of the writing sprints and that of the breaks, depending on how long you can focus and how much time you need to recharge between sprints. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The reason this method helps you write faster is that it keeps you focused on one single task. During the writing sprint, you&#8217;re only focused on writing. You don&#8217;t slow down the process by editing, doing research, or getting distracted by random notifications. You&#8217;re fully focused on that one task, and you give all your energy to it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And knowing that there&#8217;s a timer counting down, it creates a playful sense of urgency for the task. It motivates you even more to write, curious to see just how much you can actually write during that time.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #2: How to write faster by turning writing into play</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This tip goes hand in hand with the previous one. You can turn your Pomodoro writing sessions into a fun little game where you&#8217;re competing only with yourself. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For each writing sprint, write down your word count. Then, in the next sprint, see if you can beat your word count from the previous sprint. And to make the game even more fun and help you write faster, plan some small (or big!) rewards for reaching new writing milestones. This motivates you to write faster during each sprint to earn your reward.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Need help tracking your writing sprints? I created a fun and easy-to-use Google Sheet you can download for free to track your progress after each writing sprint. It automatically calculates your total words for the day, shows your overall progress in your book, and even tells you exactly how many words you have left until the finish line. Use it to turn your writing sessions into a fun little game so you can stay focused, write more, and enjoy the process. You can download the word count tracker using the form below:</p>

<div style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container aligncenter hwh-optin gb-block-container"><div class="gb-container-inside"><div class="gb-container-content" style="max-width:1600px">

<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="800" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity.png" alt="Word Count Tracker for Writers" class="wp-image-4765" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-300x300.png 300w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-150x150.png 150w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-768x768.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-600x600.png 600w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-75x75.png 75w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="background-color:#fff6f2;flex-basis:66.66%"><div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="5ac1a66d4e" src="https://happywriterhub.kit.com/5ac1a66d4e/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>
</div>
</div>
</div></div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To take this game even further, try doing writing sprints together with your writing friends. This challenge will motivate you to write even faster as you strive to be the one reaching the highest word count during that session.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finding ways to add a bit of playfulness to your writing sessions will help you write faster. When you&#8217;re playing, you&#8217;re having fun. And when you&#8217;re having fun, you no longer dread your writing sessions. Instead, you enjoy your writing sessions and you&#8217;re having fun writing.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions-683x1024.png" alt="Adding playfulness to your writing sessions makes you a more productive writer" class="wp-image-5731" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-adding-playfluness-to-your-writing-sessions.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That joy brings you into a flow state. The longer you can maintain that state, the more productive and enjoyable your writing sessions will be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me know in the comments what are some fun things you do to make writing feel more like play and less like work? And if you currently don&#8217;t, you really should try adding more playfulness to your writing sessions.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #3: Create the ideal ambiance for a productive writing session</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To write faster, you need to be able to stay laser-focused during your writing sessions. But all the clutter around you steals your focus. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In order to create the right environment for a focused, productive writing session, you should eliminate all distractions—both physical and digital. A cluttered desk filled with pens, books, notebooks, unopened mail, and half-empty coffee mugs can easily distract you from your story. And so can all the notifications constantly popping up on your phone and laptop. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you want a truly productive writing session? Clean your desk, close all unnecessary apps and programs, and silence all notifications. With all these distractions gone, your muse will return full of energy to inspire your next writing session.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment-683x1024.png" alt="Decluttering your writing environment helps you be a more productive writer " class="wp-image-5732" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/How-to-write-faster-by-decluttering-your-writing-environment.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That takes care of removing what hinders your focus. Once that&#8217;s done, it&#8217;s time to add in the things that actually support your focus. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you focus better with music playing, or do you prefer writing in complete silence? Do you prefer bright lighting, or does soft candlelight help you relax and focus better? Do you like a clean, minimal screen, or are you more motivated to write when the writing program has a beautifully designed theme, maybe one that matches your genre? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My personal preferences are the <a href="https://harry-potter-sounds.ambient-mixer.com/ravenclaw-common-room" type="link" id="https://harry-potter-sounds.ambient-mixer.com/ravenclaw-common-room" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ravenclaw Common Room sound atmosphere</a> from <a href="https://www.ambient-mixer.com/" type="link" id="https://www.ambient-mixer.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ambient Mixer</a>, a dark room filled with lots of fairy lights, and a customized Scrivener theme that helps me immerse myself even deeper into the story.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re surrounded by the right atmosphere for you, you focus better during your writing sessions, and you&#8217;re able to write much faster. And if you happen to work best in a crowded or messy space, that’s perfectly okay too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is all about creating an atmosphere that works for you, making your writing sessions as enjoyable and inspiring as possible so you can be as productive as possible.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #4: Join a writing community to stay motivated and write faster</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In tip number 2, we discovered how to write faster by turning writing sprints into a fun game with other writers from your writing community. But that&#8217;s not the only way the writing community can help you write faster. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re working from home, alone at your desk, writing can start to feel a little lonely. And when that happens, you sometimes lose a bit the motivation as well. But when you&#8217;re part of a writing community, you feel much more motivated and energized to work, especially when you&#8217;re writing alongside others. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I sometimes meet up with other writers in a café, where we each work on our own projects. And every time, I notice the same thing: I write so much faster there than when I&#8217;m writing alone at home. Being around other focused writers energizes me, and seeing them deeply engaged in their work helps me stay focused on mine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So if you want to write faster, try meeting up with other writers for writing sessions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don&#8217;t know any writers in your town? No problem! Join an online writing community. Several authors I follow on YouTube host virtual writing sprints. So you still get to work together with other writers, just from a distance. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You still encourage each other, stay accountable, and keep going, and that does wonders for both your motivation and your writing speed.</p>

</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #5: Actually learn how to type faster</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wow, this is mind-blowing! How did I even come up with such an <em>ingenious</em> tip?! But jokes aside, this is actually an important one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, our writing speed isn’t limited by how fast our ideas are flowing, but by how quickly we’re able to capture those ideas on the page. And that’s where learning to type faster can make a real difference.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Improving your writing speed can help you write your book faster. There are many programs available online that you can use to train yourself to type faster. A simple Google search will reveal lots of them, and many of them are completely free, like <a href="https://www.edclub.com/sportal/" type="link" id="https://www.edclub.com/sportal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this one</a>, for example. Give it a try and see if it helps you write faster. Why not take advantage of all these free resources to help you become a more productive writer?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The faster you type, the easier it becomes to keep up with your ideas—and the faster you can bring your stories to life.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how to overcome self-doubt as a writer so you can achieve your writing goals and enjoy the writing journey.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you ever find yourself questioning your writing abilities, wondering if you&#8217;re actually good enough to write a book? You stare at the blinking cursor, asking yourself, <em>&#8220;What if I can&#8217;t finish my novel? What if I do finish it&#8230; but nobody likes it?&#8221;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Relax, dear Happy Writer, you&#8217;re in excellent company. Every great author at some point has faced self-doubt! Self-doubt is simply part of an author&#8217;s journey. It usually shows up because we’re our own toughest critics, and because we genuinely care about putting our best work out into the world. And we really should strive to put our best work out there. But when self-doubt takes over, it often prevents writers from writing, finishing, and sharing their work at all.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post I&#8217;m going to share with you 6 tips on how to overcome self-doubt as a writer so you can become a more confident writer, achieve your writing goals, and finally have the confidence to share your stories with the world without fear holding you back. So let&#8217;s dive in and see how to overcome self-doubt as a writer while having fun writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how to overcome self-doubt as a writer.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #1: Embrace self-doubt as a normal part of writing</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From Stephen King to J. K. Rowling to Nora Roberts, no matter how famous they are, every author has had to deal with self-doubt at some point in their career.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you feel self-doubt creeping in, here&#8217;s an important thing to remember: self-doubt doesn&#8217;t come from you not being good at writing. It comes from caring deeply about your work. You love your story, your characters, and the world you&#8217;ve created. You&#8217;ve poured your heart and soul into it. And now it&#8217;s time to share it with the world. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book-683x1024.png" alt="Doubting yourself comes from caring deeply about your book" class="wp-image-5687" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-caring-deeply-about-your-book.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But then self-doubt starts to surface, and you wonder, <em>&#8220;What if my story isn&#8217;t good enough?&#8221; &#8220;What if people read it and think I have no business being an author?&#8221;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At least these are some of the fears I&#8217;m struggling with at the thought of publishing my book. Do you experience similar fears? While these feelings can be absolutely terrifying at the beginning of your publishing journey, I don&#8217;t think they will ever completely go away. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I believe that the more you show up, and the more you face your fears, the quieter your inner voice of self-doubt will become. And it&#8217;s okay if it doesn&#8217;t completely disappear. That little bit of doubt might actually be helping you to constantly push yourself to improve your craft. And it&#8217;s helping you put your best work out there. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just make sure to keep that voice in check. Don&#8217;t let it stop you from sharing your stories with the world. And you should definitely not let it steal the joy out of writing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As long as you&#8217;re enjoying the writing process, you can overcome those feelings of self-doubt and keep pushing forward.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process-683x1024.png" alt="How to overcome self-doubt as a writer by enjoying the writing process" class="wp-image-5689" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoying-the-writing-process.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #2: Celebrate small wins to build momentum and overcome self-doubt as a writer</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-doubt loves perfectionism. The more you try to make your manuscript perfect, the more room you give self-doubt to take over. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But you know truly helps you overcome self-doubt as a writer? Seeing that you&#8217;re making progress. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, it&#8217;s great that you want to share your best work with your readers. But perfectionism slows down your book&#8217;s progress. So every day you have to keep fighting to advance your novel. And every time you do that, celebrate it! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Focusing on what you&#8217;ve already achieved, no matter how small the step towards completion may seem, it&#8217;s one of your main weapons to help you overcome self-doubt as a writer. Seeing your progress builds creative confidence, and the more confident you get, the quieter the voice of self-doubt becomes. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence-683x1024.png" alt="How writing progress creates creative confidence for authors" class="wp-image-5690" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-writing-progress-creates-creative-confidence.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might be thinking that you haven&#8217;t finished a book yet, so you have nothing to celebrate. Wrong, dear Happy Writer! You have plenty to celebrate:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>showing up to write</li>

<li>reaching your word count goal for the day</li>

<li>completing a new scene or a new chapter</li>

<li>and even brainstorming new ideas for future scenes</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All of these count as real progress and build your self-confidence, while crushing your self-doubt bit by bit with every new small win. So make sure to celebrate every small win and enjoy the writing journey every single day.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey-683x1024.png" alt="How to overcome self-doubt as a writer by celebrating small wins and enjoying the writing journey" class="wp-image-5688" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-enjoy-the-writing-journey.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #3: Create your personal cheer squad to lift you up</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing is a pretty isolating job. Most of the time, you&#8217;re alone at your desk with lots of thoughts about your story going through your mind. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if that&#8217;s all you were thinking about, it would be great. But we all know that&#8217;s not rarely the case. Instead, we wonder, &#8220;Will my readers like the story?&#8221; &#8220;Will I be able to finish the story?&#8221; &#8220;Should I even be writing?&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more time you spend alone in your own head, the louder these thoughts become. And before you know it, self-doubt starts to build up, preventing you from reaching your writing goals. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But there is a way out. And the solution is both simple and fun! Establish your personal cheer squad. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your cheer squad could be other writers you know in your town, or a writing community you join online, or even a very good friend who knows you, knows how hard you work, and understands how deeply you care about your writing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This isn&#8217;t about being praised for your work. It&#8217;s about having supportive people around you, people who can cheer you on through your toughest writing days. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And on the days you don&#8217;t have access to them, remember that I&#8217;m here to do exactly that. I&#8217;m here to cheer you on every step of your writing journey, and I&#8217;ll keep creating videos and blog posts to offer you motivation and inspiration to keep going.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence-683x1024.png" alt="How Authors Can Overcome Self-Doubt and Find Their Writing Confidence" class="wp-image-5696" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Authors-Can-Overcome-Self-Doubt-and-Find-Their-Writing-Confidence.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #4: Develop your writing confidence toolkit to invite positivity</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I LOVE motivational quotes. I have them everywhere: in a Notion file, on index cards, as desktop wallpapers, all there to keep me going through the toughest days. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Motivational quotes are perfect for a quick boost in confidence. They remind you how strong you are, encourage you to push through difficult times, and help you take things more lightly so you can enjoy the journey, not just the destination. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When self-doubt kicks in, it&#8217;s easy to fall into a downward spiral and let all those thoughts take over. And when they take over, you&#8217;re no longer focused on your manuscript. It&#8217;s your fears that become the focal point of your attention.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reading motivational quotes and encouraging affirmations helps to shift your mind from everything that could go wrong to the things that are already going right. They remind you of your accomplishments, of who you are and what you&#8217;re fighting for as a writer. A little bit of positivity goes a long way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you need some additional reinforcement? I have the perfect thing for you. I created a free set of positive affirmations for writers wallpapers that you can download using the form below. Use them as a daily reminder that you&#8217;re a happy, creative, and capable writer, someone who can achieve anything they set their mind to.</p>

<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="background-color:#fff6f2;flex-basis:66.66%"><div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="71ccb288f8" src="https://happywriterhub.kit.com/71ccb288f8/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>
</div>
</div>
</div></div></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #5: Overcome self-doubt as a writer by focusing on the joy of writing</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-doubt shifts your focus away from the joy of writing and towards the fear of how you and your work might be perceived by others. When self-doubt takes over, all your worries start to resurface, and the more you dwell on them, the more your confidence slowly fades. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s why you need to bring the joy of writing back to the forefront. And the easiest way to do that is to reconnect with your writing purpose, to remember why you started writing in the first place. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember how excited you were when that very first story idea came to your mind? The passion for that project was so strong that you just had to do it. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Focus on that passion now. Focus on the joy of storytelling, on your amazing characters, and on the enchanting world you&#8217;ve created. When you start enjoying the writing process again, your perspective changes. When you stop focusing on the outcomes you&#8217;re aiming for, like publishing, reviews, or income, self-doubt will take a back seat to make room for the pure joy of writing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we talked about <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-when-you-dont-feel-like-writing-motivation-hacks/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-when-you-dont-feel-like-writing-motivation-hacks/">how to write when you don&#8217;t feel like writing</a>, we talked about the power of finding or remembering your writing purpose. Remembering that spark of passion helps you beat both procrastination and self-doubt, which in turn helps you get back on track with your writing project.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-when-you-dont-feel-like-writing-motivation-hacks/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/how-to-write-when-you-dont-feel-like-writing-motivation-hacks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How to Write When You Don&#8217;t Feel Like Writing</a></mark></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tip #6: Keep a &#8220;feel-good&#8221; file to highlight your accomplishments</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is not a brag file meant to inflate your ego. It&#8217;s about having a tool to remind you of how capable you are of achieving great things. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you remind yourself of your past successes, you&#8217;re telling your brain that future successes are possible as well. This builds up your confidence and helps you overcome self-doubt.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes-683x1024.png" alt="How to overcome self-doubt as a writer by celebrating past writing successes" class="wp-image-5686" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-to-overcome-self-doubt-as-a-writer-celebrate-past-writing-successes.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So go ahead and create your &#8220;feel-good&#8221; file. Add to it all your personal successes, your professional achievements, kind feedback or reviews you&#8217;ve received, writing milestones, and even short snippets of your writing that you are really proud of.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I don&#8217;t personally keep a digital file for this, but I do keep my &#8220;feel-good&#8221; notes in my bullet journal. Every time I start a new bullet journal, I reserve the first two pages for what I call my &#8220;confidence boosters.&#8221; I keep there short bullet points of things I&#8217;ve achieved personally and professionally, and of the times I’ve been strong enough to get through some of the toughest moments in my life. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These notes are really powerful. They remind me of how strong I am, and they encourage me to push forward in moments of self-doubt.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create your own confidence boosters list and review it whenever self-doubt makes you question your abilities. And remember that even if you can&#8217;t ever fully eliminate self-doubt, you can overcome it by continuing to show up, do the work, and build your confidence. You&#8217;ve got this, dear happy writer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about how to overcome self-doubt as a writer. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how we can get writing inspiration from travel and how visiting new places can boost your creativity.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether it&#8217;s a two-month journey around the world or just a half-day trip close to home, traveling brings a sense of adventure to your writing and makes writing feel exciting again. It provides endless ideas for plots, characters, and obviously for world-building. Moreover, traveling stimulates your brain, ignites your curiosity, and reignites your joy for writing. </p>

<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors-683x1024.png" alt="Writing Inspiration from Travel - Creativity Boost for Authors" class="wp-image-5653" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creativity-Boost-for-Authors.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, I’m sharing with you the different ways in which travel sparks creativity, boosts your motivation to write, and even helps you become a better writer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So if you feel like your writing muse has gone on vacation, it might be time for you to take one too. And when you return from your travels, you&#8217;ll see that your muse is waiting for you and excited to get back to work. Let&#8217;s explore five ways we can get writing inspiration from travel.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Travel boosts creativity</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re always in the same environment, it can sometimes be difficult to come up with new ideas. There&#8217;s simply nothing new to stimulate the creative part of your brain. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To be creative, your brain needs novelty, and traveling is one of the best ways to provide novelty for your brain. When you travel, especially to places you haven&#8217;t seen before, you&#8217;re surrounded by new stimuli and fresh ideas everywhere you look. Everything feels new: the towns, the landscapes, the people, and the cultures—all new and ready to spark inspiration for your novels. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So whenever you feel stuck in your writing, try going somewhere new. It doesn&#8217;t have to be a one-month vacation. Even a simple day trip somewhere you haven&#8217;t been before can be enough to wake up your creativity. You’ll be surprised how quickly story ideas start flowing again. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And the best part? You&#8217;re having a great time, which you can technically say it&#8217;s work.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting-683x1024.png" alt="Traveling makes writing more exciting" class="wp-image-5656" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-more-exciting.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Travel provides writing prompts</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best ways to get writing inspiration from travel is through the constant stream of fresh ideas and writing prompts you encounter along the way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you travel, writing prompts are everywhere. From the mysterious stranger you meet on the train, to the loving old couple who run the cozy bed &amp; breakfast you booked in a remote mountain location, to the cheerful group of girls who can&#8217;t stop laughing during a girls&#8217; night out at the local pub, each of them can become inspiration for one or more characters in your next novel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They all have lots of interesting stories to tell. Be a good listener, and they will offer endless writing inspiration. Even if they don&#8217;t provide the entire plot of a novel, they can still inspire part of the plot, a scene, a character, or a meaningful conversation between characters. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be curious and be open to listening to and learning from people and cultures very different from your own. Their stories won’t just inspire your writing, they will enrich your life as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Has traveling ever sparked a story idea or creative inspiration for you? If yes, where were you? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For me, it happened during my trip to Rapa Nui, the island more commonly known as Easter Ialsnd. That&#8217;s where I got the idea for my very first novel. Not only did it inspire me to write a book, but it eventually led me to leave my job in academia to fully embrace a creative life. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You never know just how much your next trip could impact your writing and maybe even your life. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun-683x1024.png" alt="Traveling makes writing fun" class="wp-image-5657" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-makes-writing-fun.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Traveling increases writing motivation</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think about that feeling when you return from a holiday: relaxed, refreshed, and full of energy. You&#8217;re so excited, full of energy and ideas that you don&#8217;t even know where to start. All you want to do is get back to writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s the magic of traveling. It&#8217;s not just about seeing new places and interacting with new people. When you&#8217;re always in the same environment, you sometimes feel stuck. The same ideas keep repeating, plot problems feel impossible to solve, and the harder you think about them, the further the answers seem to drift away. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when you travel, you disconnect from that cycle. It frees your mind and gives you clarity, and as a result, you see solutions you simply weren&#8217;t able to see before. And the freer your mind becomes, the more ideas start to emerge and plots finally start to materialize.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s why your writing motivation feels so strong when you return from a holiday. So the conclusion is simple: take as much time as possible to travel so you can be as creative as possible.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers-683x1024.png" alt="Writing Inspiration from Travel - Creative Inspiration for Writers" class="wp-image-5658" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-Inspiration-from-Travel-Creative-Inspiration-for-Writers.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Traveling helps with &#8220;Show, Don&#8217;t Tell&#8221;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traveling naturally sharpens your observation skills because when you travel, you&#8217;re engaging all the senses to experience everything to the maximum. We&#8217;ve talked in <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/">a previous post</a> about how a walk in nature can help you improve your &#8220;Show, Don&#8217;t Tell&#8221; writing by activating all your senses. Travel simply takes this idea one step further.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/writing-inspiration-from-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">How to Get Writing Inspiration from Nature</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you travel, you use all your senses to fully immerse yourself in everything the holiday has to offer. Every experience you have, both on your travels and at home, combines multiple sensory details that you can later use to describe scenes more vividly in your novel. The problem is that at home we&#8217;re not always paying close attention to them. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But when we travel, we want to soak everything in. We slow down, pay close attention to everything around us, and use all our senses to mindfully experience the new environment. Think of the soft glow of streetlights in a quiet town after everyone has gone to bed, or the delicious tastes and scents during the chocolate-making course you&#8217;re taking together with other chocolate lovers, or the fresh, chilling air on your hike up the mountain where everything around you is sparkling white. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you fully live these moments and keep a record in your mind of all those sensory details, you&#8217;ll be able to write richer, more vivid descriptions when you return. So if you want to keep your readers happy, make sure to immerse yourself in as many experiences as possible on your travels.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Traveling brings clarity to your story</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we talked about <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/">the writing habits of famous authors</a>, we saw that many of them came up with the ideas for their most famous novels when they weren&#8217;t actively working on the novel. From a nice, relaxing bath to a train ride to a walk in the graveyard, great ideas often show up when you&#8217;re not trying to force them to appear.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Writing Habits of Prolific Authors</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you take a step back from writing and allow your brain to relax, it becomes free to come up with ideas you may have been blocking when you kept trying to direct and control them. The ideas are already there, you just have to give them space to surface. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks-683x1024.png" alt="Traveling provides fresh story ideas and unblocks creative blocks" class="wp-image-5654" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Traveling-provides-fresh-story-ideas-and-unblocks-creative-blocks.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And one of the best ways to create that mental space is by traveling. When you travel, you&#8217;re focused on the new places you see, the interesting people you meet, and enjoying all the new experiences. That gives your muse some room to breathe. Maybe you worry that while you&#8217;re focused on other activities and having fun enjoying your travels, your muse might think you&#8217;re ignoring her and will abandon you. But she won&#8217;t. She&#8217;s still there, she&#8217;s just quietly working in the background. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And then, suddenly, when you least expect it, she&#8217;s back. You&#8217;ve just reached the summit of the mountain you hiked, and you suddenly know how to get your protagonist over a challenging time in her life. Or you&#8217;re relaxing at a spa and suddenly you know exactly how to get your hero back together with his love interest. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wherever you are, as long as you&#8217;re taking a break and relaxing, you&#8217;ll find that solutions for your plot problems will come out of nowhere. Except it&#8217;s not really out of nowhere. New experiences help your brain form new connections, and that leads to a boost in creativity, which brings clarity to your story. And that&#8217;s exactly what your story, your heroes, and your readers needed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So when you travel, everyone is happy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about getting writing inspiration from travel. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about how writing in a café helps writers be more productive, focused, inspired, and happier while writing.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing in a café can completely transform your writing routine. From increased focus and motivation to fun little writing adventures and uncovering a fresh set of ideas, café writing might actually be the strategy you were looking for to boost your writing productivity.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1500" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More.png" alt="How Writing in a Cafe Helps Authors Write More" class="wp-image-5608" style="aspect-ratio:0.6669871061264973;width:683px;height:auto" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More.png 1000w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-Writing-in-a-Cafe-Helps-Authors-Write-More-800x1200.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing at a coffee shop can help you write more, while reducing your stress and rekindling your passion for writing, all without the pressure of strict discipline or burnout.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover the benefits of writing in a café and see how to turn café writing into a playful, productive, and fun activity.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="How Writing in a Café Makes You a More Productive Writer - Write More While Having a Fun Day Out" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aphuK_YAtu8?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing in a cafè sparks creativity</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;re a writer. So what do you usually do for work? You sit down at your desk and type. And you repeat this process every day. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it&#8217;s great! Having a routine is good for the brain because it signals when it&#8217;s time to write. Having a routine boosts your productivity and ensures consistent progress on your book.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But after a while, this process starts to feel like a job. Doing the same thing, in the same place, every single day no longer feels stimulating, and then you start noticing a decline in creativity. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While routines are great for productivity, novelty is what you need for your creativity to flourish. That&#8217;s why changing your workspace from time to time can be great for sparking new ideas, especially when you feel stuck. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process-683x1024.png" alt="Novelty is what authors need for their creativity to flourish" class="wp-image-5620" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-novelty-to-the-creative-process.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Changing your writing environment from time to time brings a sense of excitement and adventure back into your writing process. The background noise, the soft music, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm croissants, and even the conversations happening at the next table, can help stimulate your brain and spark fresh ideas for your novel. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process-683x1024.png" alt="Changing your writing environment brings adventure to the writing process" class="wp-image-5617" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-brings-adventure-to-the-writing-process.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So next time you don&#8217;t feel like sitting down at your desk to write, or you&#8217;re dealing with writer&#8217;s block, try writing in a café. You&#8217;ll feel more relaxed, more energized (especially with a cup of coffee by your side), and before you know it, your ideas will start flowing back to your refreshed brain.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;ve seen in <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/">a previous post</a> how J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter books in cafés. The amazing wizarding world she created is proof that writing in a coffee shop can do wonders for your creativity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Writing Habits of Famous Authors</a></mark></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Background noise improves writing focus</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The sound of the espresso machine, the soft conversations at the table next to you, and the music playing in the background can work wonders for your focus. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;d naturally assume that all these sounds should be distracting. And they probably would be if they were directly involving you. But the coffee machine isn&#8217;t your responsibility, you&#8217;re not the one preparing the drinks. And the conversations taking place at nearby tables don&#8217;t have anything to do with you either.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unless you&#8217;re wearing a funny costume for your café writing session. That might change the topic of a few conversations. And if you&#8217;re wearing that, you probably don&#8217;t care what others say about you anyway. Good for you! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it comes to café music, I found that both soft and upbeat music can help with my focus, just in different ways. The soft, relaxing music calms your mind and supports creativity, while the more upbeat music energizes you and helps with a faster flow of ideas. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, you might be the kind of writer who needs total silence when writing. And that&#8217;s perfectly okay. We each have our own way of getting into creative mode. If you like silence, you can still write from a café, you just need to remember to bring your noise-canceling headphones with you. That way, you still benefit from the change of environment and enjoy the cozy café writing atmosphere while blocking out all the external noise. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The coffee shop atmosphere becomes your accountability partner</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing at home certainly has a lot of advantages, but it also comes with certain disadvantages. And one of the biggest ones is that writing from home makes it incredibly easy to procrastinate. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You suddenly remember that there are some dishes in the sink that urgently need washing, even though they&#8217;ve been sitting there for days. Or you need to get a snack. And when that&#8217;s done, you need another one. And then another one. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or you just need to quickly look something up online, and two hours later you realize you&#8217;re reading a Wikipedia article about the platypus. Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong. The platypus is an absolutely fascinating creature. But do you even remember how you ended up on that page, so far from the topic of your novel? And if you are writing a book about platypuses, do let me know. I love those little guys! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The point is that working from home comes with endless distractions that prevent you from actually writing. But when you&#8217;re going to a café to write, that is your sole objective while you&#8217;re there. You&#8217;re there to write, so you use that time intentionally to work on your novel. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing in a café creates accountability, giving you a clear purpose and a focused writing period dedicated entirely to your novel, free from all the tempting distractions you have at home. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability-683x1024.png" alt="Working together with other authors creates accountability" class="wp-image-5619" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-creates-acountability.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cafè writing makes writing more fun</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I wrote the script for this video and blog post in a café. And I had so much fun while writing it! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, I love the background music, and I was dancing at the table while writing. What do I care what other people think of me? I was productive and having lots of fun at the same time! That&#8217;s a great writing session for me. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Second, café writing makes it easy to play with your writing sprints. Instead of setting your writing sprint to precisely 25 minutes, you can have fun adjusting the duration to match the café atmosphere. Write for the length of a song. Or until the next person walks into the café. Or for as long as it takes you to drink a coffee.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just be careful with this last one so you don&#8217;t drink too much coffee. Health first! Always!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Third, when you&#8217;re writing in a café you can have a fun little competition with other people from the café, people who don&#8217;t even have a clue that they are competing with you. See if you can achieve your writing goal before the person working at the table next to yours finishes their task. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With so many people working on their own projects in cafés, it&#8217;s easy to find a friendly “competitor.” Will you be able to complete your scene before they close their laptop? This kind of playful competition increases your productivity and makes the writing process a lot more fun.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors-683x1024.png" alt="How cafe writing makes the writing process fun for authors" class="wp-image-5623" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/How-cafe-writing-makes-the-writing-process-fun-for-authors.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cafès are a source of inspiration for your novels</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I mentioned earlier that the conversations taking place at nearby tables have nothing to do with you. And usually, that&#8217;s true. But they can, however, provide fresh ideas for your novels. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every person has an interesting story to tell based on their life experiences. So when you overhear even small snippets of their stories from their conversations, I&#8217;m pretty sure they will spark some ideas for your next book. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It doesn&#8217;t have to be as dramatic as the plot of <em>Ocean&#8217;s Eleven</em>, <em>Die Hard</em>, or <em>Red Notice</em>, but you can still find inspiration for your stories from the lived experiences of those around you. People are fascinating, so why not use them as inspiration for your future novel? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And maybe there&#8217;s not a big conversation happening next to you. Maybe it&#8217;s just one person quietly sipping his coffee. You can try to imagine what his story might be. What was the greatest adventure of his life? The biggest regret and the proudest achievement? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And you know what? You don&#8217;t have to stop at imagining. Why not start a conversation? That way you actually get to hear someone&#8217;s story, get fresh ideas, and maybe even make a new friend along the way.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more-683x1024.png" alt="Writing in a cafe helps authors write more" class="wp-image-5624" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-in-a-cafe-helps-authors-write-more.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing in a cafè connects you with the writing community</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You know what makes writing even more fun? Writing together with other writers. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I moved to Vancouver, I didn&#8217;t know almost anyone here. So joining a writing group was great both for socializing and for boosting my writing productivity. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we meet to work in a coffee shop, each of us focused on our own project, it significantly boosts my writing productivity. Whether I’m brainstorming new ideas, plotting a novel, or writing a blog post, being surrounded by other writers in a café makes me feel completely energized — almost like my creativity is supercharged.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the one hand, there&#8217;s the café itself, with all the writing benefits I mentioned before. And on the other hand, there&#8217;s the community. It&#8217;s a powerful combination for a productive, happy writer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re with other writers and interact with people facing similar challenges and writing struggles, it makes those struggles feel more bearable. It reminds you that you&#8217;re not alone in this journey. You support and encourage each other, making the writing process lighter and you have more fun writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about the benefits of writing in a café. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What if I told you that all it took to become a more productive writer was implementing a few small writing habits into your daily writing routine? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, I’m sharing with you 9 simple daily writing habits that help you achieve writing flow faster while also enjoying the writing process. No more pressure. No more stress. No more burnout. You can integrate these small, playful writing habits into your everyday life to make writing feel lighter, easier, and more fun… even on busy days.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier-683x1024.png" alt="Daily Writing Habits that Make Writing Easier" class="wp-image-5570" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-that-Make-Writing-Easier.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover what small daily writing habits we can use to write more consistently, get into flow faster, and make the writing sessions more enjoyable.</p>

</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #1: Start with a tiny writing warm-up</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, when you start your writing session, it can take a little while to get into writing mode. One simple action you can take to help you get there much faster is reading what you wrote the previous day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This small first step helps you warm up for the new writing session. As you read, you remember what you wrote, what your characters are doing right now, and what was the last thing that happened in the story. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By reconnecting with your story first, it becomes much easier, and more fun, to continue writing right where you left off.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #2: Create a daily writing trigger</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Is there anything you could use to signal to your brain that it&#8217;s time to start writing? Maybe you train your brain to know that your writing starts right after breakfast? Or after an early morning walk. Or, if you&#8217;re a night owl, right after dinner. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By adding your writing session into a specific time slot in your daily routine, it becomes much easier to start writing because you’re signaling to your brain that this is writing time now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your brain learns the pattern: you’ve done your daily exercise, and the next thing it expects is for you to sit down and write. So you’re basically training your muse to show up as soon as you take that action.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing inspiration&#8230; on command. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #3: End every session mid-sentence</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve heard several authors suggest this habit, but it&#8217;s not one that works for me personally. I&#8217;ll still mention it here because many writers do find it useful. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The idea is to stop your writing session mid-sentence, so that the next day it&#8217;s easier to jump straight back into writing by continuing from where you left off. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every time I&#8217;ve tried to do this, it has actually made me more confused. When I’m writing, I know exactly what I want to say, but if I stop mid-sentence, the next day I don’t always remember how I wanted to phrase that sentence or where I was going with it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. I&#8217;m curious if it actually helped you get into writing faster.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers-683x1024.png" alt="Daily Writing Habits for Productive Writers" class="wp-image-5573" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Daily-Writing-Habits-for-Productive-Writers.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #4: Set a ridiculously easy daily writing goal</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes we procrastinate on starting to write because our word count target is overwhelming. If you say to yourself, &#8220;Today, I have to write 3000 words,&#8221; that can feel overwhelming, and it makes you dread even starting your writing session. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what if, instead of 3000 words, you set your word count target to just 100 words? Suddenly, that feels much more achievable and a lot less intimidating.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And here&#8217;s the fun part: once you start writing, you often end up writing a lot more than 100 words. Lowering the word count target for the day might actually help you write more, and you&#8217;ll feel a lot less stressed while writing.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less-683x1024.png" alt="Stress less by setting a lower word count target" class="wp-image-5613" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-write-more-and-stress-less.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #5: Turn writing into a mini game</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Writing is always easier when you have fun writing. When you find ways to gamify writing, you turn a task into a playful, fun activity instead of a chore. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing-683x1024.png" alt="Writing is easier when you have fun writing" class="wp-image-5615" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-have-fun-writing.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So what can you do to gamify writing? One simple way is to use the Pomodoro technique and, with each new writing sprint, try to beat your word count from the previous writing sprint. It becomes a friendly competition with yourself where the only winner is you. And no matter what your final word count is, you still win, because you’re advancing your book.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST</strong>: <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/pomodoro-technique-for-writers-writing-sprints/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/pomodoro-technique-for-writers-writing-sprints/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Pomodoro Technique for Writers</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you need help tracking your word count, I created a free word count tracker Google Sheet (linked in the form below) that you can use to track your writing sprints, your daily writing progress, and your overall book progress.</p>

</div></div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you love stickers, like I do, you can use them to decorate your writing tracker every time you reach a new writing milestone. Pretty stickers as a reward for playing a fun writing game.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are so many fun ways to gamify writing and enjoy the writing sessions more. What&#8217;s your favorite way to gamify writing?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #6: Create a writing ritual you love</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a writing ritual signals to your brain that you&#8217;re in writing mode, and that this is the time to focus only on your writing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your writing ritual doesn&#8217;t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as having one dedicated spot in your home where you always write. Or maybe you always write at your favorite café. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can also create a fully immersive writing atmosphere for your session using lighting, sound, a specific place, a dedicated keyboard, or even a special coffee next to you. All of these little cues signal to your brain that <em>this</em> is writing time. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My writing ritual includes fairy lights and the Ravenclaw Common Room sound atmosphere from ambient-mixer.com. What&#8217;s your special writing ritual?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #7: Separate writing time from editing time</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing that really helped me increase my daily writing productivity was separating writing from editing. Writing and editing use two different parts of the brain. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re writing, you&#8217;re being creative. You&#8217;re building new worlds, creating new characters, and using your imagination to the fullest. When you&#8217;re editing, on the other hand, you&#8217;re being more analytical, checking for errors and fixing things that are already on the page. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So when you keep switching from writing to editing during the same session, everything slows down. Your brain keeps switching from creative mode to analytical mode, and that makes the entire process feel a lot harder than it needs to be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A simple fix is to keep them separate in your daily writing routine. Write first and write messy. Nobody is going to see it or judge your first draft. And when it&#8217;s done, you can go into analytical mode and focus on refining and improving your manuscript.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #8: Celebrate showing up (not word count)</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we&#8217;re ambitious and overly critical of ourselves, we can start to feel guilty if we show up for the writing session and end up not writing any new words. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But just because you didn&#8217;t add any new words to the page doesn&#8217;t mean that you didn&#8217;t make progress on your book. Maybe your writing session was spent brainstorming new ideas on where to take the plot next, or coming up with new ways to make your characters miserable, or how to save them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe you simply reread what you wrote last time, so you can reconnect with your story and figure out how to continue tomorrow. All of that <em>counts</em> as progress. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just because you don&#8217;t have a new number to add to your word count tracker doesn&#8217;t mean you weren&#8217;t working. Writing is so much more than adding one word after another. It involves lots of brainstorming, world-building, character development, and just&#8230; thinking. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celebrate showing up and spending time in the world of your book, even if it was just for a short while.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world-683x1024.png" alt="Celebrate showing up for your novel and spending time in the world of your book" class="wp-image-5614" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Writing-habits-to-enjoy-your-story-world.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Habit #9: End the writing day on a cheerful note</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We often tend to focus on the critical side. So we say to ourselves, &#8220;I only wrote this many words today,&#8221; or &#8220;I should be further along after this writing session.&#8221; </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But remember that every small progress is still progress. And both your current writing session <em>and</em> your next one will feel so much better if you take a moment to celebrate today&#8217;s wins.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celebrate that you showed up. Give yourself a little sticker, or a bigger reward, for another day where you showed up for your book. Leave yourself an encouraging note for tomorrow. Find small, fun ways to celebrate and end today&#8217;s session on a positive note.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you do that, the day and your writing will feel lighter and happier. You’ll enjoy the process so much more when you celebrate your progress instead of criticizing yourself for not being where you thought you “should” be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Big writing goals are built on small daily writing habits. Choose the ones that feel good, let go of the rest, and enjoy the process of becoming a more consistent writer.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about the external writing obstacles that are undermining your writing goals and the strategies we can apply to overcome these writing obstacles.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s not your talent, your creativity, or your writing experience that is standing in the way of completing your manuscript. It&#8217;s often the external writing obstacles like busy schedules, high expectations, and constant distractions that keep interfering with your writing goals.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The good news, dear Happy Writer, is that you can overcome these obstacles so you can move forward on your dream of writing and publishing your book. You just need to make some small adjustments to your approach so you don&#8217;t let life get in the way of your writing. By learning how to navigate the challenges life throws at you, you will be able to make meaningful progress on your manuscript while actually enjoying the writing process.</p>

<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face-683x1024.png" alt="How to Overcome External Writing Obstacles that Writers Face" class="wp-image-5486" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-that-Writers-Face.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previously, we tackled the <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/overcome-mental-blocks-keeping-writers-stuck/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/overcome-mental-blocks-keeping-writers-stuck/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">internal writing obstacles</a>, a.k.a. the mental blocks that keep writers stuck. In this post, we&#8217;re going to see how we can overcome the external writing obstacles we encounter on our writing path. And if you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="How to Stop Letting Life Sabotage Your Writing Goals - Overcoming 4 External Obstacles Writers Face" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wOXwhkF5Fdk?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Obstacle #1: Lack of Time</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How many times have you postponed writing until the next day because you felt like you simply didn&#8217;t have time to write? When you&#8217;re busy with work, family commitments, and other chores and errands, finding time to write can sometimes feel impossible. And since we can&#8217;t find a one- or two-hour slot to fit writing in between all the other commitments, we tell ourselves that there just isn&#8217;t enough time to write, and we give up on writing for that day altogether.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here&#8217;s the good news: in order to advance your book, you don&#8217;t need to write for two hours straight. Not even for one full hour.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of feeling the pressure of having to find two hours to sit down and write, try reframing how you see your writing sessions. Try thinking of writing as mini creative adventures. All you need is 10-15 minutes where all your focus goes to your book. That&#8217;s all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During that short time, you&#8217;re completely immersed in your story, joining your characters on a mini adventure and, at the same time, you&#8217;re making progress on your book. It doesn&#8217;t have to be a huge breakthrough. Even a few words count as real progress. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book-683x1024.png" alt="Writing even a few words counts as progress on your book" class="wp-image-5492" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-external-writing-obstacles-to-make-progress-on-your-book.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you use writing sprints, you can turn writing into a fun little game. Track the word count for each day&#8217;s writing sprint, or sprints, and then the next day, try to beat your word count from the previous day. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To make the writing game even more fun, I created a free word count tracker you can download using the form below. As you record the word count from each writing sprint, you’ll soon start seeing your progress as all those small word counts add up. You’re slowly building your novel, one short writing sprint at a time.</p>

<div style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container aligncenter hwh-optin gb-block-container"><div class="gb-container-inside"><div class="gb-container-content" style="max-width:1600px">
<div class="wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center hwh-optin-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex">
<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="background-color:#fff6f2;flex-basis:33.33%"><div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="800" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity.png" alt="Word Count Tracker for Writers" class="wp-image-4765" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-300x300.png 300w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-150x150.png 150w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-768x768.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-600x600.png 600w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Simple-Word-Count-Tracker-Google-Sheet-Writing-Productivity-75x75.png 75w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>
</div></div>

<div class="wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow" style="background-color:#fff6f2;flex-basis:66.66%"><div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="5ac1a66d4e" src="https://happywriterhub.kit.com/5ac1a66d4e/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>
</div>
</div>
</div></div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So instead of waiting for a large amount of free time to suddenly become available, use the short breaks you already have and turn them into playful writing sprints. That way, you&#8217;re not just making progress on your novel, but you&#8217;re also having fun writing it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of it like catching up with your friends for 15 minutes. After all, we usually know our characters so well… we might actually consider them to be our best friends.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Obstacle #2: Lack of a Supportive Environment &amp; Other People&#8217;s Opinions</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have you ever stopped yourself from writing a certain book, writing in a certain genre, or even writing <em>at all</em> because of what your family or friends said? Or because of the way they looked at you when you mentioned you were writing a book? That look that says, <em>&#8220;Sure, that&#8217;s a nice hobby&#8230; but what do you actually do to earn some money?&#8221;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That can be incredibly discouraging. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When family members, friends, and coworkers question your writing dreams, it can really drain your confidence. Even if they mean well and are just speaking out of concern for your future, their comments can still hurt and make you doubt yourself. So&#8230; what can you do?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face-683x1024.png" alt="How to Overcome External Writing Obstacles Authors Face" class="wp-image-5494" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-Overcome-External-Writing-Obstacles-Authors-Face.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First and most importantly, you don&#8217;t need anyone&#8217;s approval to write your book. Let people think whatever they want. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but don&#8217;t let them get in the way of your dreams.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>Recommended reading:</strong><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Let-Them-Theory-Life-Changing-Principles/dp/9043937967/ref=sr_1_2?crid=21C84ZEDUZT6L&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vQcvO53ONDKvdNnSMfLMxacUxDOSKyrNvJvXrCsFfBHlAr6AnsDKXP2E0x_OGsLf2sRHuIRtIixbFpAl_KaoZFLrCVBjeNpRieUPEuLDWQCMkRDpCcok9fNKf0wCoXtigWskGFpPpkJVV1AvtrcnU4NfG4PSiba5SlfbvOTlmci3z3IB8fftll1FxpAUg6gEXvpdDtRjgWNLS99RCXNv95kOQmK3hSqV8IxtkL1qSyw.-g0SUkLw57pu7UHe8xew_8sb336qn_WW8lO9GKv081M&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=let+them+book+mel+robbins&amp;qid=1768960206&amp;sprefix=let+them%2Caps%2C206&amp;sr=8-2" type="link" id="https://www.amazon.com/Let-Them-Theory-Life-Changing-Principles/dp/9043937967/ref=sr_1_2?crid=21C84ZEDUZT6L&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vQcvO53ONDKvdNnSMfLMxacUxDOSKyrNvJvXrCsFfBHlAr6AnsDKXP2E0x_OGsLf2sRHuIRtIixbFpAl_KaoZFLrCVBjeNpRieUPEuLDWQCMkRDpCcok9fNKf0wCoXtigWskGFpPpkJVV1AvtrcnU4NfG4PSiba5SlfbvOTlmci3z3IB8fftll1FxpAUg6gEXvpdDtRjgWNLS99RCXNv95kOQmK3hSqV8IxtkL1qSyw.-g0SUkLw57pu7UHe8xew_8sb336qn_WW8lO9GKv081M&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=let+them+book+mel+robbins&amp;qid=1768960206&amp;sprefix=let+them%2Caps%2C206&amp;sr=8-2"> <em>The Let Them Theory</em> by Mel Robbins</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t let anyone&#8217;s opinions affect how <em>you</em> view your work, and don&#8217;t let their doubts hinder your pursuit of your writing dreams. These dreams are yours. You&#8217;re the one who understands them best and knows why they matter. Just keep following them and let people think what they want. You&#8217;ll never be able to control how others think anyway.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All you can do is continue to follow your dreams, and eventually they will understand. And if they don&#8217;t&#8230; does it really matter when you&#8217;re happy doing what you love?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Second, if you&#8217;re really worried about other people&#8217;s opinions, remember this: you don&#8217;t have to share with them everything you&#8217;re doing. You&#8217;re allowed to keep writing as your own little secret project. That can be especially helpful in the early stages.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re a full-time writer, you don&#8217;t have to share all the details with people who don&#8217;t understand your choices or don&#8217;t take your writing seriously. With them, you can use selective sharing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The same applies if you write in two different genres. Maybe you can make one genre public and keep the other one secret under a pen name that you never have to share with anyone. That could be useful if you think people might be extremely critical of one of the genres you write in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember that, above all, you should protect your joy. Your dreams don&#8217;t need anyone else&#8217;s permission. What matters most is that <em>you</em> are happy with what you’re creating. So find ways to pursue your dreams by integrating them into your life as it is right now, while still honoring all your other responsibilities.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles-683x1024.png" alt="Protect your joy as a writer" class="wp-image-5490" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Protect-your-writing-joy-to-overcome-the-external-writing-obstacles.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Obstacle #3: Comparison &amp; Social Media Overwhelm</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve said it before, and I&#8217;ll say it again: <strong>comparison kills creativity</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scrolling through your social media feed and checking on how many books all the successful authors you follow have published, and what their earnings are, can feel discouraging if you use it as a comparison. Sometimes, when we see how successful other people are, it&#8217;s easy to focus on how far we still have to go, instead of how far we&#8217;ve already made it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One option is to stop following what other authors are doing altogether and simply focus on your own writing. This is great both for your mental health and for your productivity. Less time on social media means more time dedicated to writing, and hopefully not using that time on other distractions instead. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That said, cutting out social media completely can sometimes make you feel disconnected from the writing community.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second option, and the one I personally use, is to reframe comparison into encouragement. I love it when the authors I follow post about their wins: publishing a new book, releasing multiple books in a year, or reaching new income milestones. I find it uplifting and truly motivating.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Seeing what’s possible for other writers inspires me and reassures me that it’s possible for me, too. It helps me believe that if I keep showing up and doing the work, things can work out. If they can achieve success, I can too. And so can you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All you need to do is keep writing, and most importantly, have fun writing. If you’re enjoying the writing process, you&#8217;re already successful. You don’t have to wait until the book is published to feel proud or fulfilled.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles-683x1024.png" alt="Enjoying the writing process already makes you a successful author" class="wp-image-5489" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Enjoying-the-writing-process-to-beat-writing-obstacles.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be happy now that you&#8217;re doing what you love. That joy alone makes you just as successful as the authors you follow on social media.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Writing Obstacles #4: Constant Distractions &amp; Mental Overload</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How many tabs to you have open when you&#8217;re trying to write? I sometimes have twenty tabs open, and that&#8217;s just in one window! Sometimes I even have two or three windows open at the same time. Not exactly great for focus&#8230; </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But as I work on many different projects, I <em>feel</em> like I need all of those tabs. But in reality? I really don&#8217;t. One time, my laptop restarted, and I lost all those tabs. Absolutely no problem at all! If anything, it cleared some of my mental clutter. I was no longer staring at a wall of open tabs, not even remembering what most of them were for.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it&#8217;s not just tabs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also have to deal with all the notifications from emails, social media, news alerts, and other apps. Every single notification pulls your attention away from your writing and redirects it somewhere else. And 99% of the time, those notifications really aren&#8217;t important. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, can we really afford to let our focus drift away from our project for something that most often turns out to be completely insignificant?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Studies show that every time we switch our attention from our work to something else, it can take about <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/p903-mark.pdf" type="link" id="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/p903-mark.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">23 minutes to fully regain focus</a> when we return to our work. And if we do that multiple times during our writing session, that leaves very little time to actually write.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t let all these distractions lead to mental overload and prevent you from achieving your dreams. So what can you do about it? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personally, I turn off all notifications during my writing sessions to make sure that nothing pops up on my laptop while I&#8217;m writing. That alone makes a huge difference. But if you think even that won&#8217;t be enough to stop you from browsing the net, or checking the news or social media, you might need a more drastic approach. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this case, I recommend using <a href="https://freedom.to/" type="link" id="https://freedom.to/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Freedom</a>, an app that blocks all sites except the ones you absolutely need for writing. I sometimes use Freedom myself, and it&#8217;s a great way to protect your focus. And you can do the same with your phone. Disable all notifications except the urgent ones, and maybe even consider keeping your phone in a different room while you write.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember to keep your mind clear so that your muse can join you during your writing session.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post was all about overcoming the external writing obstacles that writers face. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This post is all about overcoming the mental blocks that keep writers stuck so you can push through and write your book with clarity, confidence, and joy.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oftentimes, the biggest obstacles in writing don&#8217;t come from issues with the story itself, but from the mental blocks that are holding us back. Our fears, self-criticism, and procrastination prevent us from either starting to write or keeping a consistent writing routine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, dear happy writer, we&#8217;re going to face these mental blocks head-on. Let&#8217;s work together to turn fear, perfectionism, self-doubt, and overthinking into something way less scary that no longer holds us back from achieving our writing dreams.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post is about overcoming the mental blocks (the <strong>internal obstacles</strong>) that keep us stuck and stop our creativity from moving forward. In the next post, we&#8217;ll tackle <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/overcoming-external-writing-obstacles/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/overcoming-external-writing-obstacles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the <strong>external obstacles</strong> that interfere with our writing goals</a>.</p>

</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mental block #1: Perfectionism</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perfectionism can quietly creep up behind you, influencing everything from writing your first draft to refining all your future drafts.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The impact of perfectionism on the writing process</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, when you&#8217;re a perfectionist, you want everything to be&#8230;. well&#8230; <em>perfect</em> from the very beginning. But when you&#8217;re writing your first draft, if you expect it to be perfect from the start, it will only hold you back. Not only will it slow your progress, but it will also take the joy out of the writing process. And that&#8217;s the last thing you want.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;re writing a book because you&#8217;re excited about the story you want to share. You love your characters and want them to go on the adventure of their lifetime. But perfectionism makes you doubt every word you write, constantly whispering that you could do better. And maybe you can. But leave that for the revisions. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you&#8217;re drafting, embrace curiosity, experimentation, and playfulness. Instead of trying to make your first draft perfect, just call it a &#8220;discovery draft&#8221; and have fun with it. Explore different ideas, create playful scenarios, and make mistakes—this is where the magic begins.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Perfect can wait. Right now, it’s time to play.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Perfectionism challenges in the editing process</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Everyone has to edit their first draft to get it into the right shape for publication. Often, that means going through several rounds of developmental edits, copy and line edits, and finally, proofreading to catch those last minor errors. But at some point… all of that has to stop.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perfectionism can trap you in an endless editing loop because it makes you think that your book has to be perfect before you send it out for publication. So you go round&#8230; and round&#8230; and round again in editing cycles, never feeling brave enough to finally press &#8220;publish&#8221;. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But while you wait for your manuscript to be perfect, another author will have published their book, gotten feedback from readers, and learned how to make their future books better. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So set a limit for the number of drafts you&#8217;ll allow yourself, and trust that your readers will forgive a few minor mistakes. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I once found a pretty big science-related error in a book by one of my favorite authors. Did I stop reading his books or think less of him or his writing? Of course not! I love his books, and I still read them with great excitement, eager to discover the new adventures he creates for his characters.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember &#8220;<strong>done is better than perfect,</strong>&#8221; and keep going.<br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mental block #2: Comparing yourself to famous authors</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m a new writer, but I&#8217;ve been reading books all my life. I love books. So of course, I want my books to be as good as the ones I love to read. And I&#8217;m sure you feel the same way. You want your readers to enjoy your stories just as much as you enjoy the books written by your favorite authors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But once again, our mindset about the first draft can become a big roadblock between us and the story we want to bring to life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When writers compare their rough drafts to someone else’s polished masterpieces, it can only lead to trouble. We&#8217;ve talked about first drafts before, when we looked at the writing habits of prolific authors. Even the most famous authors know that their first draft is not the final book. It’s simply the foundation they’ll build on to get to the publishable version.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-683x1024.png" alt="How to overcome mental blocks for writers " class="wp-image-5433" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/How-to-overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>RELATED POST:</strong> <a href="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" type="link" id="https://happywriterhub.com/inspiration-writing-habits-of-famous-authors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Inspiration from the Writing Habits of Famous Authors</a></mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But our inner critic makes us criticize our writing, doubt our ability to finish the manuscript, and wonder why our draft doesn&#8217;t sound as great as a published bestseller from our favorite writer. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Don&#8217;t listen to that discouraging voice</strong> and remember that the first draft is for <em>your eyes only</em>. It&#8217;s just you putting your ideas together and figuring things out. So take it lightly and expect that the quality won&#8217;t match that of the books you read. And that&#8217;s perfectly all right.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nobody will see it, nobody will judge it, and nobody will compare it to other published books. Unless you accidentally publish your first draft&#8230; So don’t stress about your first draft—just <strong>write, explore, and enjoy the creation process!</strong><br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mental block #3: Waiting for inspiration instead of building momentum</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many writers wait for a lightning bolt of inspiration. But lightning is unreliable. If you&#8217;re waiting for inspiration to strike, it could take days, weeks, or even months. So instead of waiting for it to show up, why not chase it yourself?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create your own writing inspiration and motivation. How do you do that? By remembering why you write, creating a fun and playful writing ritual, and visualising your dream of holding your published book in your hands. Your muse joins you faster when you reconnect with your writing purpose, revisit your goals, and make writing fun—much faster than if you were just sitting around waiting for it to visit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><mark style="background-color:#fff6f2" class="has-inline-color"><strong>Recommended reading:</strong> <em><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Start-Why-Simon-Sinek/dp/1591844517/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2PM9U7E0D0V6W&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.gvmql0ONUwaUKFet7FQpoJ9Zuzvr2Kr0X9hZL3Z3XvEog5SBYDrv_Zq3rcdpbygoZMss7vATkO0KhxrT9gd41F9CNduh4hNtGOjqIzsjJr4UZA-1Sr0qkTN3sdtKXnSsPyU6gmL7glqCbmqEZ21XIuBnEoqEuHRNzpFP5GeZ9wnQxBUe0p22MN_rF3giSL8YfbVu8KosCSlPNAqf2jZn2jJaQ5UknFzI8up-NTtxDbc.52mz0Ao_AvYpndnN-1c7XHH899gI5XY8DvghEdtVtlI&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=start+with+why&amp;qid=1764367129&amp;refinements=p_n_feature_browse-bin%3A2656022011&amp;rnid=2272759011&amp;sprefix=start+with+why%2Caps%2C181&amp;sr=8-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Start With Why</a></em> by Simon Sinek.</mark></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By taking matters into your own hands, you&#8217;re replacing the stress of &#8220;Where&#8217;s my inspiration?&#8221; with a joyful ritual that builds momentum. <strong>By using tiny, consistent habits, you make sure that your muse comes when you call her</strong> and not just when she feels like showing up.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And once these habits are in place, you&#8217;ll be able to write even when you don&#8217;t feel like writing. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mental block #4: The “I don’t know enough yet” syndrome</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of all the mental blocks, this is the toughest one for me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A common issue for writers, especially new writers like myself, is the idea that “I’ll start writing once I learn everything.” Obviously, it&#8217;s important to learn about story structure, character development, and what makes good writing. But at some point, we have to put the craft books down and actually start writing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My number one <a href="https://www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths/en/252137/home.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Clifton Strength</a> is Learner. I LOVE LEARNING! So for me, it&#8217;s especially difficult to figure out when I&#8217;ve learned enough so I can start writing. I feel like there&#8217;s always more to learn so I can write a good book. And I&#8217;m sure that many other writers face these problems. We want to write a good book, so of course, we need to learn how to write a good book. But for us to write and publish that book, we have to actually write it. And that&#8217;s not happening while we hide behind all the craft books we can get our hands on.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have to trust that we&#8217;ve learned enough and start writing. But here&#8217;s the thing. We will never know everything. There will always be more to improve, more to study, and more to figure out. Yet, the best way to improve your writing is by starting with the knowledge you already have—and learning the rest along the way. That&#8217;s how skill is built. Knowing something theoretically is not enough to master the craft. We have to do it over and over again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And with every book you write, you learn more and you become more skilled as a writer. Your first book will make the next one better, and that one will make the next one even better. So while you will never know everything, <strong>you absolutely know enough to start.</strong> And the more you write, the more you will understand what makes a great book truly great.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books-683x1024.png" alt="Overcome mental blocks for writers by writing more books" class="wp-image-5435" style="width:320px" srcset="https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books-683x1024.png 683w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books-200x300.png 200w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books-768x1152.png 768w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books-800x1200.png 800w, https://happywriterhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Overcome-mental-blocks-for-writers-by-writing-more-books.png 1000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So here&#8217;s my advice to you—and to myself: just start writing, enjoy the process, and trust that every word you type is a step towards becoming a better writer. And you can always read more craft books as you write. Just make sure you continue to make progress on your manuscript.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mental block #5: Being too serious about writing</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have you ever sat down to write and felt like it was something you had to do, not something you wanted to do? When did writing become a chore instead of something you looked forward to?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you first started writing your book, you were excited about the story and all the adventures you were envisioning for your characters. So you wrote with joy and excitement. You couldn&#8217;t wait to get to your laptop and start typing. But somewhere along the way, that excitement dimmed, and writing turned into a burden. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So what happened? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe you put too much pressure on yourself to write the perfect novel. In that case, revisit mental block number one and don&#8217;t worry so much about making it perfect. Explore new ideas for your story, for your character arcs, and let your curiosity and playfulness lead the way. Use that newfound energy to reignite your passion for your story.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or maybe you just became too serious about being a writer. You started treating writing like a job instead of your creative expression. Sure, writing can be a job, especially if you&#8217;re a full-time author and you need to earn money from your writing. But don&#8217;t let that added pressure make you forget why you started writing. Remember how fun it is to join your characters on wild adventures. And remember that anything is possible in the pages of a book—so let yourself enjoy that freedom.</p>

It&#8217;s a set of playful writing scenarios to reignite your creativity and remind you of how much fun writing can be when you treat it like exploration rather than an obligation.</p>
