This post is all about overcoming the mental blocks that keep writers stuck so you can push through and write your book with clarity, confidence, and joy.

Oftentimes, the biggest obstacles in writing don’t come from issues with the story itself, but from the mental blocks that are holding us back. Our fears, self-criticism, and procrastination prevent us from either starting to write or keeping a consistent writing routine.

Today, dear happy writer, we’re going to face these mental blocks head-on. Let’s work together to turn fear, perfectionism, self-doubt, and overthinking into something way less scary that no longer holds us back from achieving our writing dreams.

This post is about overcoming the mental blocks (the internal obstacles) that keep us stuck and stop our creativity from moving forward. In the next post, we’ll tackle the external obstacles that interfere with our writing goals.

Mental block #1: Perfectionism

Perfectionism can quietly creep up behind you, influencing everything from writing your first draft to refining all your future drafts.

The impact of perfectionism on the writing process

First, when you’re a perfectionist, you want everything to be…. well… perfect from the very beginning. But when you’re writing your first draft, if you expect it to be perfect from the start, it will only hold you back. Not only will it slow your progress, but it will also take the joy out of the writing process. And that’s the last thing you want.

You’re writing a book because you’re excited about the story you want to share. You love your characters and want them to go on the adventure of their lifetime. But perfectionism makes you doubt every word you write, constantly whispering that you could do better. And maybe you can. But leave that for the revisions.

When you’re drafting, embrace curiosity, experimentation, and playfulness. Instead of trying to make your first draft perfect, just call it a “discovery draft” and have fun with it. Explore different ideas, create playful scenarios, and make mistakes—this is where the magic begins.

Perfect can wait. Right now, it’s time to play.

Perfectionism challenges in the editing process

Everyone has to edit their first draft to get it into the right shape for publication. Often, that means going through several rounds of developmental edits, copy and line edits, and finally, proofreading to catch those last minor errors. But at some point… all of that has to stop.

Perfectionism can trap you in an endless editing loop because it makes you think that your book has to be perfect before you send it out for publication. So you go round… and round… and round again in editing cycles, never feeling brave enough to finally press “publish”.

But while you wait for your manuscript to be perfect, another author will have published their book, gotten feedback from readers, and learned how to make their future books better.

So set a limit for the number of drafts you’ll allow yourself, and trust that your readers will forgive a few minor mistakes.

I once found a pretty big science-related error in a book by one of my favorite authors. Did I stop reading his books or think less of him or his writing? Of course not! I love his books, and I still read them with great excitement, eager to discover the new adventures he creates for his characters.

Remember “done is better than perfect,” and keep going.

Mental block #2: Comparing yourself to famous authors

I’m a new writer, but I’ve been reading books all my life. I love books. So of course, I want my books to be as good as the ones I love to read. And I’m sure you feel the same way. You want your readers to enjoy your stories just as much as you enjoy the books written by your favorite authors.

But once again, our mindset about the first draft can become a big roadblock between us and the story we want to bring to life.

When writers compare their rough drafts to someone else’s polished masterpieces, it can only lead to trouble. We’ve talked about first drafts before, when we looked at the writing habits of prolific authors. Even the most famous authors know that their first draft is not the final book. It’s simply the foundation they’ll build on to get to the publishable version.

RELATED POST: Inspiration from the Writing Habits of Famous Authors

But our inner critic makes us criticize our writing, doubt our ability to finish the manuscript, and wonder why our draft doesn’t sound as great as a published bestseller from our favorite writer.

Don’t listen to that discouraging voice and remember that the first draft is for your eyes only. It’s just you putting your ideas together and figuring things out. So take it lightly and expect that the quality won’t match that of the books you read. And that’s perfectly all right.

Nobody will see it, nobody will judge it, and nobody will compare it to other published books. Unless you accidentally publish your first draft… So don’t stress about your first draft—just write, explore, and enjoy the creation process!

Mental block #3: Waiting for inspiration instead of building momentum

Many writers wait for a lightning bolt of inspiration. But lightning is unreliable. If you’re waiting for inspiration to strike, it could take days, weeks, or even months. So instead of waiting for it to show up, why not chase it yourself?

Create your own writing inspiration and motivation. How do you do that? By remembering why you write, creating a fun and playful writing ritual, and visualising your dream of holding your published book in your hands. Your muse joins you faster when you reconnect with your writing purpose, revisit your goals, and make writing fun—much faster than if you were just sitting around waiting for it to visit.

Recommended reading: Start With Why by Simon Sinek.

By taking matters into your own hands, you’re replacing the stress of “Where’s my inspiration?” with a joyful ritual that builds momentum. By using tiny, consistent habits, you make sure that your muse comes when you call her and not just when she feels like showing up.

And once these habits are in place, you’ll be able to write even when you don’t feel like writing.

Mental block #4: The “I don’t know enough yet” syndrome

Of all the mental blocks, this is the toughest one for me.

A common issue for writers, especially new writers like myself, is the idea that “I’ll start writing once I learn everything.” Obviously, it’s important to learn about story structure, character development, and what makes good writing. But at some point, we have to put the craft books down and actually start writing.

My number one Clifton Strength is Learner. I LOVE LEARNING! So for me, it’s especially difficult to figure out when I’ve learned enough so I can start writing. I feel like there’s always more to learn so I can write a good book. And I’m sure that many other writers face these problems. We want to write a good book, so of course, we need to learn how to write a good book. But for us to write and publish that book, we have to actually write it. And that’s not happening while we hide behind all the craft books we can get our hands on.

We have to trust that we’ve learned enough and start writing. But here’s the thing. We will never know everything. There will always be more to improve, more to study, and more to figure out. Yet, the best way to improve your writing is by starting with the knowledge you already have—and learning the rest along the way. That’s how skill is built. Knowing something theoretically is not enough to master the craft. We have to do it over and over again.

And with every book you write, you learn more and you become more skilled as a writer. Your first book will make the next one better, and that one will make the next one even better. So while you will never know everything, you absolutely know enough to start. And the more you write, the more you will understand what makes a great book truly great.

So here’s my advice to you—and to myself: just start writing, enjoy the process, and trust that every word you type is a step towards becoming a better writer. And you can always read more craft books as you write. Just make sure you continue to make progress on your manuscript.

Mental block #5: Being too serious about writing

Have you ever sat down to write and felt like it was something you had to do, not something you wanted to do? When did writing become a chore instead of something you looked forward to?

When you first started writing your book, you were excited about the story and all the adventures you were envisioning for your characters. So you wrote with joy and excitement. You couldn’t wait to get to your laptop and start typing. But somewhere along the way, that excitement dimmed, and writing turned into a burden.

So what happened?

Maybe you put too much pressure on yourself to write the perfect novel. In that case, revisit mental block number one and don’t worry so much about making it perfect. Explore new ideas for your story, for your character arcs, and let your curiosity and playfulness lead the way. Use that newfound energy to reignite your passion for your story.

Or maybe you just became too serious about being a writer. You started treating writing like a job instead of your creative expression. Sure, writing can be a job, especially if you’re a full-time author and you need to earn money from your writing. But don’t let that added pressure make you forget why you started writing. Remember how fun it is to join your characters on wild adventures. And remember that anything is possible in the pages of a book—so let yourself enjoy that freedom.

If you need a little help, check out the free downloadable file in the form below with the “WHAT IF” game. It’s a set of playful writing scenarios to reignite your creativity and remind you of how much fun writing can be when you treat it like exploration rather than an obligation.

Because pressure kills creativity. When writing becomes a serious mission instead of joyful play, your brain simply shuts down, and writing is no longer fun. So show up with more lightness, curiosity, and a playful attitude to make writing fun again.

This post is all about how movies inspire world-building for your novels, so you can use visual storytelling to make your world feel real.

Ever watched a movie or TV series and thought, “Wow… I wish I could live there!” From the magic-filled halls of Hogwarts, to the awe-inspiring nature of Virgin River, to the strange alien worlds of Star Trek, all these worlds we see on screen can spark endless ideas for our own stories.

Today, dear happy writer, I have five tips for you on how we can use the visual details from movies and TV shows to design fictional worlds that your readers will love. From memorable settings to cultural details, we’ll explore exactly how to capture that on-screen magic and bring it to life in your own novel. Let’s discover together how movies inspire world-building for your novel.

In the previous blog post, we explored how movies and TV shows help to level up your writing by inspiring unforgettable characters and engaging plots. Today, we continue our journey into the world of movies and TV shows by exploring ways in which movies inspire world-building for your novels and help you create rich, immersive settings for your own stories.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover how movies inspire world-building.

1. Noticing the visual details that make worlds feel real

World-building isn’t just about the big picture, like the design of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. What makes it come alive are the small details, like the portraits that can speak and walk from painting to painting, the tiniest magical objects and creatures, and even the house robes in their distinct colors. It’s these little touches that make a reader feel like they’re part of that world.

Now, think about your own novel. What small, vivid elements can you incorporate into your own novel to make your world even more original and memorable? When you watch a movie or TV series, take a moment to notice the subtle visual cues—the patterns of a dress, the decorations of a café, the uniform of a starship captain. Then imagine how you could translate those visual cues into rich, descriptive writing.

Here’s a fun exercise for you: watch a movie that is based on a book, like Harry Potter. Watch the movie and then compare the on-screen visuals to how J. K. Rowling described them in the books. Reflect on how you can use similar descriptions in your novels so your readers feel like they’re not just reading your story, but are actually seeing the world and living inside it?

So, the next time you’re watching a movie or TV show, pay close attention to all the small details you see. Those details are the secret ingredients that turn your fictional world from “pretty good” to “I never want to leave!”

2. Learning how worlds reflect the story’s mood

World-building isn’t just about creating cool settings—it’s also one of the most powerful ways to set the tone for your story. If you want to provide a completely immersive experience for your readers, make sure that the world of your novel reflects and reinforces the tone and overall feeling of your story.

Imagine setting the intense, high-stakes drama of The 100 into the cozy, twinkle-lit streets of a Hallmark small-town romance. I like each, but in its own specific setting. That’s because the setting perfectly supports the story’s tone. A feel-good holiday backdrop, where everything is brimming with optimism, would instantly deflate The 100’s tension. Similarly, the lighthearted love story in a small-town romance would be completely overshadowed in the gritty, post-apocalyptic wasteland of The 100.

When watching the movie, take note of the world-building aspects you can implement in your own writing to enrich your story. Analyze the lighting, the color palettes, and the architecture, and figure out how to use these elements to amplify the tone and genre of your novel.

3. Borrowing cultural elements to enrich your setting

Besides creating memorable settings and setting the tone of your novel, world-building also consists of the cultural elements of your world. And while culture matters in every genre, it’s especially important in fantasy and sci-fi, where you actually have to invent new races, religions, and societies from scratch.

Going back to The 100, we see that the grounders developed a very different culture, beliefs, customs, and even a different language compared to the people who lived on the space station. Discovering these differences and understanding the grounders’ worldview is part of the fun of watching this show.

The same is valid for any movie or book you love—full immersion comes from well-developed cultures. When watching a movie, pay attention to what makes those cultures unique and which elements enhance the story. Study their traditions, language, clothing, food, and even small everyday details to get additional inspiration for your novel. Compelling world-building is in the details. Your reader wants to know what makes your world unique, and carefully planning all these elements can make your world feel alive and give readers a reason to be fascinated by it.

4. Using sound and atmosphere for immersion

Besides the visual cues, when comparing a movie to a book, another big difference that stands out is sound. In a movie, you can actually hear the birds singing, the person shouting, and the fireworks exploding. And you can definitely notice when total silence is strategically used to heighten the impact of the story. It’s impossible to directly experience these sounds in a book—but you can make your readers imagine them through vivid descriptions.

Watching movies and TV shows can help you with this. Pay close attention to what audio details filmmakers are using to bring the scene and the fictional world to life. Is the scene set in nature where you can hear the melodic sounds of birds, the gentle flow of a river, and the powerful gusts of wind? Or is it a tense moment where the lack of sound heightens the emotional impact of the scene? Or is it a chaotic, loud marketplace?

How would you describe all these scenes using showing instead of telling? And it’s the showing part that we can learn from movies. Instead of saying, “It’s a busy market,” let your readers hear the bargaining voices, the metallic sound of coins, and the arrival of trucks with fresh produce. And that’s what will make the reader feel like he’s actually in that market.

As a fun exercise, pick a movie scene, close your eyes, and just listen to the voices, the sudden noises, and all the background sounds you can identify. Now put them all into writing. Then, implement the same descriptive elements in your novel so readers feel like they’ve stepped right into your world.

5. Incorporating unique landmarks and signature spaces in the design of your fictional worlds

All the memorable fictional worlds from the novels you loved feature certain iconic landmarks. Just think of Hogwarts, with its moving staircases, the Room of Requirement, and the Forbidden Forest. Just hearing those names instantly transports you back into the magical world of Harry Potter. These signature spaces are powerful tools that create more vivid and immersive worlds and enrich the storytelling.

What’s a signature space that immediately comes to your mind from Harry Potter or another movie or TV series you loved? Let me know in the comments below the video. And then take a moment to reflect on it. What made that landmark or space memorable? Was it the backdrop to an epic battle or a heartwarming moment? Or do you remember it simply because it’s such a unique element in the design of that world? Does it have special significance for one of the characters?

Asking yourself these questions could inspire ideas for your own novels—helping you craft unique and meaningful landmarks that will truly make your story unforgettable.

So next time someone tries to make you feel guilty about binge-watching your favorite TV series, just smile and say, “It’s not procrastination—it’s research for my novel!” Now go ahead, dear happy writer, and design fictional worlds so vivid your readers will never want to leave.

This post was all about how movies inspire world-building. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:

This post is all about overcoming your fear of writing your first novel so you can enjoy the journey and have fun writing your book.

Are you sitting in front of your computer, with a large cup of coffee next to you and your head buzzing with ideas, yet the page is still blank?
In this post, I’m sharing with you the roadmap that will help you in overcoming your fear of writing your first novel, enjoying the writing process, and having fun on your writing journey. Are you ready to finally put those first words to paper and bring your story to life?

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below for tips on overcoming your fear of writing your first novel and having fun along the way.

Understand the fear of writing

It’s important to understand that it’s normal to have doubts and fears when starting to write your first novel. When you’re writing your first book, you’re stepping into the unknown. You’ve never written a book before, and of course, you’re worried.

As you’re stepping into the unknown, your brain perceives it as a threat and tries to protect you, to keep you safe by showing you all the things that could go wrong. That’s why you end up using only half of your brain to think of your story, while the other half is constantly questioning your decision to write a book, shouting into your subconscious: “What if I write the book and it’s terrible?”, “What if nobody likes my book?”, “What if people criticize me for my writing?”

In order to enjoy the writing process, we first need to address these concerns. While the answers might not be what you were hoping for, they will provide some realistic expectations, helping you get past that initial block with clarity and renewed excitement for your project. Here we go!

“What if I write the book and it’s terrible?” – It’s very likely that your first draft will be terrible, or at least not sound like a published version of The Hunger Games that’s been through many rounds of revisions and professional editing. But to get there, you need to have a first draft ready.

“What if nobody likes my book?” – There will definitely be people who don’t like your book. There are even some people who don’t like the Harry Potter books, which is simply beyond my comprehension capabilities. What can you do… Some readers will simply not like your books, and that’s perfectly alright. They’re just not your ideal readers. Your ideal reader will love your books.

“What if people judge me for my writing?” – If they judge, let them, and maybe check out The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. Don’t let others’ opinions define you or your writing. You choose who you are and what your writing stands for.

Overcoming your fear of writing by embracing the “messy first draft”

There’s a reason so many authors talk about how lousy their first draft is. It’s because that’s the truth. No author sits down and writes the perfect novel from the beginning. The first draft is always messy, but it’s the most important step because without it, there’s nothing to improve and turn into the masterpiece you’ve been dreaming of writing.

So don’t worry about all the mistakes you make in your first draft—just focus on writing it. Knowing that your first draft doesn’t need to be perfect removes some of the pressure you’ve been putting on yourself and helps you have more fun writing.

Once you have the first draft, that’s when the magic happens! You can fix all the plot holes, make your characters more relatable, and polish your manuscript until it shines. But for it to shine, you need to have that first draft ready.

Baby steps to writing your story

Now you’re no longer worried about perfection, but another worry starts to creep in. I actually have to write a whole novel! Even as a messy first draft, that’s still about 80,000 words, or more! How am I going to write 80,000 words?!

A huge goal of a completed manuscript can be overwhelming. Don’t worry, dear happy writer! You don’t have to write all of it at once. You can start small, and small, consistent efforts over time add up.

When I wrote the first draft of my first novel, I wrote it while working a full-time job. So I had very little time to dedicate to writing, just half an hour or an hour in the early morning. You can’t finish a whole draft during that time, and you can’t make huge progress, either. But you know what you can do? You can write 100 words or 200 words. And if you do that every day, soon enough, the words compound, shaping your story into that first draft you’re aiming for.

RELATED POST: How to Write a Book While Working a Full-Time Job

You know what would make this process more fun? Turn it into a game where you track your word count and maybe even get some small rewards on a bigger milestone. A spreadsheet can help you track your daily word count and see your story’s progress.

I created a Google Sheet Word Count Tracker that you can download for free to help you monitor your progress, so you can celebrate the small and big wins. It tracks your progress for the day after a series of writing sprints, shows your full progress in the book and the word count left to the finish line. Use it to turn writing into play and make your writing sessions more fun.

Overcome your fear of writing by celebrating every small win

Writing a full-length novel is a massive project. Don’t wait until you have the finished manuscript to celebrate. As a happy writer, you need to enjoy the entire process, not just the moment you typed The End.

Celebrate each win so you can push fear away by making the entire writing process more enjoyable. As you feel you’ve accomplished something, however small it is, it defeats your doubts and helps you overcome your fear of writing your first novel because you see you’re making progress on it. It is possible to do it, and you are doing it! Way to go!

Your writing journey is full of things to celebrate! Here are just a few examples of milestones, both big and small, that you should be proud of:

achieving your word count goal for the day

completing a scene that was difficult to write

completing a chapter

pushing through writer’s block

receiving positive feedback on a scene you exchanged with a critique partner

writing 10K in a day

writing 5K in a day

writing even 1K in a day

Now it’s time to celebrate! Stand up and do your happy dance! Congratulate yourself on the great job you’re doing and reward yourself for each step that takes you closer to your dream. Doing this builds positive momentum and gives you the confidence you need in overcoming your fear of writing your first novel and keep fighting for your dream.

Find a supportive community

Writing is a solitary activity, and sometimes it feels like you’re the only one struggling with the fear and all the uncertainties of writing your first novel. But you’re not alone! Lots of other authors have the same difficulties with their first drafts as you do. That’s why connecting with fellow authors can be very helpful, offering the emotional support you need to push through the struggles of writing your novel.

Here are some ways to find your community:

Join writing groups

Consider joining a writing group, either in person or online. A writing group offers support for your writing and the challenges you face as a writer. Your fellow writers will be happy to provide encouragement and accountability during your writing journey to help keep you motivated and on track with your writing goals. You might even find a critique partner—someone to exchange manuscripts with, to give each other helpful feedback to improve your stories.

Join writing challenges

Joining writing challenges, like Sarra Cannon’s Rough Draft Challenge, Novel November, or other 10K writing challenges, provides both the fun and the encouragement you need to enjoy writing your first draft. All these kinds of challenges are helpful because you no longer feel like you’re alone in the struggle of writing your first novel. Facing similar challenges creates a supportive environment among authors, giving you someone to cheer for you along the way.

Attend writing conferences

If you want to attend writing conferences, I strongly recommend attending in-person rather than online conferences. In my opinion, nothing beats the atmosphere of in-person events for connecting with people who share your interests. Face-to-face interaction with fellow writers fosters a stronger sense of community and deeper author connections. Writer conferences are perfect for connecting with others facing similar challenges. That’s where you’ll find your support system, the tribe who will cheer you on through thick and thin.
