This post is all about overcoming the mental blocks that keep writers stuck so you can push through and write your book with clarity, confidence, and joy.

Oftentimes, the biggest obstacles in writing don’t come from issues with the story itself, but from the mental blocks that are holding us back. Our fears, self-criticism, and procrastination prevent us from either starting to write or keeping a consistent writing routine.

Today, dear happy writer, we’re going to face these mental blocks head-on. Let’s work together to turn fear, perfectionism, self-doubt, and overthinking into something way less scary that no longer holds us back from achieving our writing dreams.

This post is about overcoming the mental blocks (the internal obstacles) that keep us stuck and stop our creativity from moving forward. In the next post, we’ll tackle the external obstacles that interfere with our writing goals.

Mental block #1: Perfectionism

Perfectionism can quietly creep up behind you, influencing everything from writing your first draft to refining all your future drafts.

The impact of perfectionism on the writing process

First, when you’re a perfectionist, you want everything to be…. well… perfect from the very beginning. But when you’re writing your first draft, if you expect it to be perfect from the start, it will only hold you back. Not only will it slow your progress, but it will also take the joy out of the writing process. And that’s the last thing you want.

You’re writing a book because you’re excited about the story you want to share. You love your characters and want them to go on the adventure of their lifetime. But perfectionism makes you doubt every word you write, constantly whispering that you could do better. And maybe you can. But leave that for the revisions.

When you’re drafting, embrace curiosity, experimentation, and playfulness. Instead of trying to make your first draft perfect, just call it a “discovery draft” and have fun with it. Explore different ideas, create playful scenarios, and make mistakes—this is where the magic begins.

Perfect can wait. Right now, it’s time to play.

Perfectionism challenges in the editing process

Everyone has to edit their first draft to get it into the right shape for publication. Often, that means going through several rounds of developmental edits, copy and line edits, and finally, proofreading to catch those last minor errors. But at some point… all of that has to stop.

Perfectionism can trap you in an endless editing loop because it makes you think that your book has to be perfect before you send it out for publication. So you go round… and round… and round again in editing cycles, never feeling brave enough to finally press “publish”.

But while you wait for your manuscript to be perfect, another author will have published their book, gotten feedback from readers, and learned how to make their future books better.

So set a limit for the number of drafts you’ll allow yourself, and trust that your readers will forgive a few minor mistakes.

I once found a pretty big science-related error in a book by one of my favorite authors. Did I stop reading his books or think less of him or his writing? Of course not! I love his books, and I still read them with great excitement, eager to discover the new adventures he creates for his characters.

Remember “done is better than perfect,” and keep going.

Mental block #2: Comparing yourself to famous authors

I’m a new writer, but I’ve been reading books all my life. I love books. So of course, I want my books to be as good as the ones I love to read. And I’m sure you feel the same way. You want your readers to enjoy your stories just as much as you enjoy the books written by your favorite authors.

But once again, our mindset about the first draft can become a big roadblock between us and the story we want to bring to life.

When writers compare their rough drafts to someone else’s polished masterpieces, it can only lead to trouble. We’ve talked about first drafts before, when we looked at the writing habits of prolific authors. Even the most famous authors know that their first draft is not the final book. It’s simply the foundation they’ll build on to get to the publishable version.

RELATED POST: Inspiration from the Writing Habits of Famous Authors

But our inner critic makes us criticize our writing, doubt our ability to finish the manuscript, and wonder why our draft doesn’t sound as great as a published bestseller from our favorite writer.

Don’t listen to that discouraging voice and remember that the first draft is for your eyes only. It’s just you putting your ideas together and figuring things out. So take it lightly and expect that the quality won’t match that of the books you read. And that’s perfectly all right.

Nobody will see it, nobody will judge it, and nobody will compare it to other published books. Unless you accidentally publish your first draft… So don’t stress about your first draft—just write, explore, and enjoy the creation process!

Mental block #3: Waiting for inspiration instead of building momentum

Many writers wait for a lightning bolt of inspiration. But lightning is unreliable. If you’re waiting for inspiration to strike, it could take days, weeks, or even months. So instead of waiting for it to show up, why not chase it yourself?

Create your own writing inspiration and motivation. How do you do that? By remembering why you write, creating a fun and playful writing ritual, and visualising your dream of holding your published book in your hands. Your muse joins you faster when you reconnect with your writing purpose, revisit your goals, and make writing fun—much faster than if you were just sitting around waiting for it to visit.

Recommended reading: Start With Why by Simon Sinek.

By taking matters into your own hands, you’re replacing the stress of “Where’s my inspiration?” with a joyful ritual that builds momentum. By using tiny, consistent habits, you make sure that your muse comes when you call her and not just when she feels like showing up.

And once these habits are in place, you’ll be able to write even when you don’t feel like writing.

Mental block #4: The “I don’t know enough yet” syndrome

Of all the mental blocks, this is the toughest one for me.

A common issue for writers, especially new writers like myself, is the idea that “I’ll start writing once I learn everything.” Obviously, it’s important to learn about story structure, character development, and what makes good writing. But at some point, we have to put the craft books down and actually start writing.

My number one Clifton Strength is Learner. I LOVE LEARNING! So for me, it’s especially difficult to figure out when I’ve learned enough so I can start writing. I feel like there’s always more to learn so I can write a good book. And I’m sure that many other writers face these problems. We want to write a good book, so of course, we need to learn how to write a good book. But for us to write and publish that book, we have to actually write it. And that’s not happening while we hide behind all the craft books we can get our hands on.

We have to trust that we’ve learned enough and start writing. But here’s the thing. We will never know everything. There will always be more to improve, more to study, and more to figure out. Yet, the best way to improve your writing is by starting with the knowledge you already have—and learning the rest along the way. That’s how skill is built. Knowing something theoretically is not enough to master the craft. We have to do it over and over again.

And with every book you write, you learn more and you become more skilled as a writer. Your first book will make the next one better, and that one will make the next one even better. So while you will never know everything, you absolutely know enough to start. And the more you write, the more you will understand what makes a great book truly great.

So here’s my advice to you—and to myself: just start writing, enjoy the process, and trust that every word you type is a step towards becoming a better writer. And you can always read more craft books as you write. Just make sure you continue to make progress on your manuscript.

Mental block #5: Being too serious about writing

Have you ever sat down to write and felt like it was something you had to do, not something you wanted to do? When did writing become a chore instead of something you looked forward to?

When you first started writing your book, you were excited about the story and all the adventures you were envisioning for your characters. So you wrote with joy and excitement. You couldn’t wait to get to your laptop and start typing. But somewhere along the way, that excitement dimmed, and writing turned into a burden.

So what happened?

Maybe you put too much pressure on yourself to write the perfect novel. In that case, revisit mental block number one and don’t worry so much about making it perfect. Explore new ideas for your story, for your character arcs, and let your curiosity and playfulness lead the way. Use that newfound energy to reignite your passion for your story.

Or maybe you just became too serious about being a writer. You started treating writing like a job instead of your creative expression. Sure, writing can be a job, especially if you’re a full-time author and you need to earn money from your writing. But don’t let that added pressure make you forget why you started writing. Remember how fun it is to join your characters on wild adventures. And remember that anything is possible in the pages of a book—so let yourself enjoy that freedom.

If you need a little help, check out the free downloadable file in the form below with the “WHAT IF” game. It’s a set of playful writing scenarios to reignite your creativity and remind you of how much fun writing can be when you treat it like exploration rather than an obligation.

Because pressure kills creativity. When writing becomes a serious mission instead of joyful play, your brain simply shuts down, and writing is no longer fun. So show up with more lightness, curiosity, and a playful attitude to make writing fun again.

Understand the fear of writing

It’s important to understand that it’s normal to have doubts and fears when starting to write your first novel. When you’re writing your first book, you’re stepping into the unknown. You’ve never written a book before, and of course, you’re worried.

As you’re stepping into the unknown, your brain perceives it as a threat and tries to protect you, to keep you safe by showing you all the things that could go wrong. That’s why you end up using only half of your brain to think of your story, while the other half is constantly questioning your decision to write a book, shouting into your subconscious: “What if I write the book and it’s terrible?”, “What if nobody likes my book?”, “What if people criticize me for my writing?”

In order to enjoy the writing process, we first need to address these concerns. While the answers might not be what you were hoping for, they will provide some realistic expectations, helping you get past that initial block with clarity and renewed excitement for your project. Here we go!

“What if I write the book and it’s terrible?” – It’s very likely that your first draft will be terrible, or at least not sound like a published version of The Hunger Games that’s been through many rounds of revisions and professional editing. But to get there, you need to have a first draft ready.

“What if nobody likes my book?” – There will definitely be people who don’t like your book. There are even some people who don’t like the Harry Potter books, which is simply beyond my comprehension capabilities. What can you do… Some readers will simply not like your books, and that’s perfectly alright. They’re just not your ideal readers. Your ideal reader will love your books.

“What if people judge me for my writing?” – If they judge, let them, and maybe check out The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. Don’t let others’ opinions define you or your writing. You choose who you are and what your writing stands for.

Overcoming your fear of writing by embracing the “messy first draft”

There’s a reason so many authors talk about how lousy their first draft is. It’s because that’s the truth. No author sits down and writes the perfect novel from the beginning. The first draft is always messy, but it’s the most important step because without it, there’s nothing to improve and turn into the masterpiece you’ve been dreaming of writing.

So don’t worry about all the mistakes you make in your first draft—just focus on writing it. Knowing that your first draft doesn’t need to be perfect removes some of the pressure you’ve been putting on yourself and helps you have more fun writing.

Once you have the first draft, that’s when the magic happens! You can fix all the plot holes, make your characters more relatable, and polish your manuscript until it shines. But for it to shine, you need to have that first draft ready.

Baby steps to writing your story

Now you’re no longer worried about perfection, but another worry starts to creep in. I actually have to write a whole novel! Even as a messy first draft, that’s still about 80,000 words, or more! How am I going to write 80,000 words?!

A huge goal of a completed manuscript can be overwhelming. Don’t worry, dear happy writer! You don’t have to write all of it at once. You can start small, and small, consistent efforts over time add up.

When I wrote the first draft of my first novel, I wrote it while working a full-time job. So I had very little time to dedicate to writing, just half an hour or an hour in the early morning. You can’t finish a whole draft during that time, and you can’t make huge progress, either. But you know what you can do? You can write 100 words or 200 words. And if you do that every day, soon enough, the words compound, shaping your story into that first draft you’re aiming for.

RELATED POST: How to Write a Book While Working a Full-Time Job

You know what would make this process more fun? Turn it into a game where you track your word count and maybe even get some small rewards on a bigger milestone. A spreadsheet can help you track your daily word count and see your story’s progress.

I created a Google Sheet Word Count Tracker that you can download for free to help you monitor your progress, so you can celebrate the small and big wins. It tracks your progress for the day after a series of writing sprints, shows your full progress in the book and the word count left to the finish line. Use it to turn writing into play and make your writing sessions more fun.

Overcome your fear of writing by celebrating every small win

Writing a full-length novel is a massive project. Don’t wait until you have the finished manuscript to celebrate. As a happy writer, you need to enjoy the entire process, not just the moment you typed The End.

Celebrate each win so you can push fear away by making the entire writing process more enjoyable. As you feel you’ve accomplished something, however small it is, it defeats your doubts and helps you overcome your fear of writing your first novel because you see you’re making progress on it. It is possible to do it, and you are doing it! Way to go!

Your writing journey is full of things to celebrate! Here are just a few examples of milestones, both big and small, that you should be proud of:

achieving your word count goal for the day

completing a scene that was difficult to write

completing a chapter

pushing through writer’s block

receiving positive feedback on a scene you exchanged with a critique partner

writing 10K in a day

writing 5K in a day

writing even 1K in a day

Now it’s time to celebrate! Stand up and do your happy dance! Congratulate yourself on the great job you’re doing and reward yourself for each step that takes you closer to your dream. Doing this builds positive momentum and gives you the confidence you need in overcoming your fear of writing your first novel and keep fighting for your dream.

Find a supportive community

Writing is a solitary activity, and sometimes it feels like you’re the only one struggling with the fear and all the uncertainties of writing your first novel. But you’re not alone! Lots of other authors have the same difficulties with their first drafts as you do. That’s why connecting with fellow authors can be very helpful, offering the emotional support you need to push through the struggles of writing your novel.

Here are some ways to find your community:

Join writing groups

Consider joining a writing group, either in person or online. A writing group offers support for your writing and the challenges you face as a writer. Your fellow writers will be happy to provide encouragement and accountability during your writing journey to help keep you motivated and on track with your writing goals. You might even find a critique partner—someone to exchange manuscripts with, to give each other helpful feedback to improve your stories.

Join writing challenges

Joining writing challenges, like Sarra Cannon’s Rough Draft Challenge, Novel November, or other 10K writing challenges, provides both the fun and the encouragement you need to enjoy writing your first draft. All these kinds of challenges are helpful because you no longer feel like you’re alone in the struggle of writing your first novel. Facing similar challenges creates a supportive environment among authors, giving you someone to cheer for you along the way.

Attend writing conferences

If you want to attend writing conferences, I strongly recommend attending in-person rather than online conferences. In my opinion, nothing beats the atmosphere of in-person events for connecting with people who share your interests. Face-to-face interaction with fellow writers fosters a stronger sense of community and deeper author connections. Writer conferences are perfect for connecting with others facing similar challenges. That’s where you’ll find your support system, the tribe who will cheer you on through thick and thin.

Be a happy writer

If you can’t find anyone else out there, remember that I’m here for you. I’m here to cheer for you on every step of your writing journey. My goal is to provide the motivation and inspiration you need to keep the words flowing, and to help you become a more productive and happier writer. I will support you with new videos and blog posts every week and encouraging messages to help you get through the tough writing days.

Reconnect with your writing purpose

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the hustle and grind that we forget why we do that work. Do you remember what motivated you to start that project? In those moments when you sit in front of the computer and you don’t feel like writing, it’s a good time to reconnect with your writing purpose.

I’m a huge fan of Simon Sinek and his book Start with WHY. I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading this book, or at least watching Simon Sinek’s TED talk on How great leaders inspire action.

Your writing purpose comes first. It’s the biggest force that pulls you towards achieving your goal. When you’re connected to your writing purpose, it becomes easier to see how to move forward and which small, meaningful steps will help you turn your dream into reality.

Find your writing purpose

As a writer, you first need to ask yourself why you started writing in the first place. Why do you want to write and publish that book? Why is this book important to you? If you’re writing it and putting so many hours and so much effort into it, then it must be important. You just have to remind yourself why.

Is there a certain life lesson you learned and feel it’s important to share through your story? Do you want to inspire or caution others through your shared life lessons? Or do you do it for the excitement of creating new worlds and joining your characters on thrilling adventures?

Maybe you do it because you really want to see your book on a bookshelf in a bookstore. Did you start writing because want to get some additional income, or in the hopes of one day quitting your job and earning a full income from your writing?

There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question. It’s all about what’s important to you. Your motivation for writing may not be the same as mine or the other authors you know, and that’s okay.

What matters is that your writing purpose is powerful enough to keep you going, even on the toughest writing days. As long as it fuels your passion and keeps you moving forward, it’s the perfect motivation for you.

Inspired by Simon Sinek’s work on finding your why, I took the time to reflect on what truly motivates me—and here is my why for Happy Writer Hub.

My Happy Writer Hub WHY

My personal why for this Happy Writer Hub blog and YouTube channel is very simple and rooted in my belief that doing work you love can bring joy—not just to your life, but to the world around you. My why is to inspire writers to follow their dreams, do what they love, have fun along the way, and stay true to their passion even during the toughest times. By inspiring them to embrace playfulness and joy at every stage, I aim to support writers in achieving their dreams and never giving up on their passion.

Bring your purpose to life: Keep a sticky note with your writing purpose next to your computer so you always feel inspired, focused, and excited to show up and write.

If you need help in getting clear on your writing motivation, I created a free one-page downloadable file to help you find your writing motivation to inspire you to write when you don’t feel like writing. I hope this provides some extra motivation during those challenging writing days.

And if you’d like to explore purpose on a deeper, life-wide level—not just for writing—I highly recommend Simon Sinek’s work, including his Start with WHY and Find Your WHY book and his Find Your WHY course.1

Lower the stakes and start small

Sometimes, even sitting down to write seems like a daunting task. Why? Because you’re thinking that you have to sit down and write a novel, or an entire chapter. Either way, it’s a lot of words and overwhelm takes over, slowly killing your motivation even before you start the writing session.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed by how far you still need to go to finish the book, remember this: Rome wasn’t built in a day. Every masterpiece takes time. You don’t have to write it all in one session. (Though if you do, please let the rest of us know how you do it!). You don’t even have to write a whole chapter.

Aim for 100 words. Start with one sentence, and then the next and then the next. Take it one word at a time, and soon enough, you’ll see just how far you’ve come. As you start writing, it often happens that you write a lot more than 100 words. Starting is the hardest part, but once you get rolling, the process gets easier and the words flow like magic.

Make it happen: Sit down and write for five minutes, knowing that writing even one sentence will bring you closer to finishing the novel.

Set the stage for inspiration

Have you ever sat down to write, only to find yourself distracted by all the clutter on your desk? The problem is not that you lack the motivation to write. It’s that there’s just too much visual clutter for you to focus.

Your writing environment can either fuel or drain your motivation. Optimizing your workspace will help you get into a writing mindset faster, boosting your productivity levels throughout your writing session.

How to optimize your writing space

Here are a few things you can do to optimize your writing space:

A good place to start is by cleaning your desk. Remove all the clutter and keep only the essentials. Your brain will thank you for it. Clear desk, clear mind. And a clear mind leads to increased focus and boosted creativity.

Create the perfect ambiance to elevate your creativity. Do you write better under bright lights, or do you find that the words flow more smoothly under the warm glow of candlelight? I prefer using fairy lights for my writing sessions—I feel like my ideas flow better under their magical glow.

Sound or no sound? Some writers thrive in total silence. In this case, noise-canceling headphones are your best friends. Do you write better with music? Then, I recommend creating a playlist with the music you find most inspiring for your writing. I tried both, and I found that the perfect boost for my creativity comes from an ambient sound that I play from ambient-mixer.com.

What are your preferred writing conditions? Have you ever tried ambient-mixer.com? If so, which is your favorite audio atmosphere? My go-to track for writing my novels is the Ravenclaw Common Room. But they offer thousands of ambient sounds you can explore to help boost your writing productivity. And it’s all free!

Action tip: Clean your desk and create an inspiring playlist to make your writing sessions more enjoyable.

A rewards game to write when you don’t feel like writing

Ideally, you should have intrinsic rewards for your work. Rejoicing in the fact that you’re working on your passion project, you’re improving your writing, and crafting stories that will touch the hearts of your readers—these are all examples of meaningful intrinsic rewards.

Sometimes on tough days, intrinsic rewards are not enough, and we need a little extra push. That’s when extrinsic rewards could do the trick.

Is there a trip you would love to take? A place you’ve been dreaming of visiting? That would be an awesome extrinsic reward to celebrate publishing the novel you’re putting so much effort into writing right now. I have a pretty exciting trip planned for when I publish my debut novel. I’m so looking forward to my trip to Squamish and having lunch at Jack’s bar (Virgin River fans, you know what I’m talking about).

You don’t have to celebrate only the big milestones. You can reward yourself with smaller rewards for completing smaller tasks. A small reward for completing a writing session, advancing your novel by 1000 words, or editing a full chapter can be the perfect motivation.

Is there a new TV show you want to watch? Dying to see what happens in the next episode of your favorite series? Don’t watch it! Use it as a reward instead. Decide to only watch a new episode when you’ve achieved the word count for the day. The desire to see what happens next to your favorite characters can be an excellent motivation to do the hard work. If there were a new season of The 100, I guarantee I would get my word count for the day just to make sure I get to see a new episode of my favorite series ever.

I know many writers love stationery, dream of stationery, and… have no more space for stationery. And yet, there’s that beautiful set of floral washi tapes or Happy Planner stickers you’ve been eyeing and stopping yourself from adding to cart every time you visit the Amazon page. You can never have too many stickers or washi tape, right? But apply this tip with caution. If you buy new stationery every time you hit 1000 words, you might have to move to a bigger house just to fit it all in.

Go for it: Set up a reward system for different milestones to turn writing into play and keep your fingers on the keyboard.

Visualize the finish line

Sometimes, when you see how many words you still have left to complete your manuscript, it can be discouraging. You have the feeling that it will never happen, that your goal is just too far. But it’s not! It’s closer than you think. You just have to push through the obstacles, one word at a time, and you’ll be at the finish line before you know it.

Remember how you saw yourself holding your published book in your hands when you first thought of writing a book? Motivation increases when you can visualize the outcome of your hard work.

Visualize that outcome again: see yourself holding the book in your hands. Imagine the beautiful cover, the feel of the pages, the smell of that freshly printed book. Don’t you feel excited just thinking about it? If just visualizing that moment feels exciting, imagine how incredible it will be when it actually happens.

You want that vision to become a reality, don’t you? With that image fresh in your mind, get back to the keyboard and start typing. Let your vision pull you toward your goal and turn your dream into reality.

Book ideas from observing the world

The world can be a great source of inspiration for your novel. By becoming a keen observer of the people you meet and the places you visit, and taking a minute to reflect on the events you’ve experienced in your life, you’re practically set for life. Ideas will come flooding into your brain. You just have to pay attention.

Characters based on real-world people

Think about that annoying colleague of yours who belittles you on every occasion, or the selfless friend who is always there for everyone, no matter what. How about that adventurous friend of yours who travels all over the world and is fearlessly experiencing all the world has to offer? Could they be a source of inspiration for your characters? Of course they can!

If you’re thinking that you can’t describe a character exactly like the irritating guy from your office because they would know you’re talking about them, you’re right. And it would probably make your work environment a bit uncomfortable… But you can still use them as a source of inspiration for your character. You don’t have to give them the exact same traits. They can be similar ones. Just make sure you don’t use their name. That would make it pretty obvious…

You know what I like about creating fictional characters? I’m in charge of what happens to them. So, both the good guys and the bad guys get the ending they truly deserve. At least in the fictional world… This is one of the reasons I love Stephen King’s books so much—people always get what they deserve in the end.

Settings based on real-world places

You can get inspiration for your settings from something as small as the coffee shop you regularly visit or as grand as the Grand Canyon or as remote as the Island of Rapa Nui. Take a good look at the places you visit, observe the little details, take notes and use them as the basis of your settings. Do you like the floral motifs used to decorate your favorite cafe? Use that and add your own spin to it. If you like it, your readers will probably like it, too.

Have you ever taken a trip to one of our world’s most breathtaking natural wonders? If you did, it’s very likely you will remember even the smallest details many years later. Don’t let these incredible memories fade away. Capture them into words, and give others the chance to enjoy those locations through your beautifully crafted prose. Let your stories bring those places to life!

Using Google Maps for Your Writing Research

Are you worried because you haven’t traveled anywhere outside your hometown? Do not worry, dear happy writer, I’ve got you covered. Or, more accurately, Google Maps has you covered.

The level of detail you can uncover with Google Maps of any location is absolutely incredible. You can explore remote areas and take virtual road trips, all from the comfort of your home. Does it match the experience of being there in person? No, but it’s still a fantastic tool for research and can take you exactly where your story needs to go. Not to mention it’s a lot cheaper than going there in person!

A few years ago, I went on my dream trip to the island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). I had dreamt of visiting the island and seeing the famous moai statues ever since I was a child. It was the best holiday of my life, and the island, with all of its fascinating history and culture, became the inspiration for my first novel.

Book ideas from history and mythology

History and myths are treasure troves of ideas. Many famous novels are based on historical events. Some examples include Gone with the Wind (Margaret Mitchell), Pompeii (Robert Harris), I was Anastasia (Ariel Lawhon), and The Accidental Empress (Allison Pataki), each bringing historical events and characters to life from a fresh perspective—proof that history is a goldmine for storytelling!

You don’t enjoy reading history, but prefer myths and legends instead? No problem! There are lots of interesting fantasy novels rooted in myths and legends.

How about retelling your favorite myth from a different perspective? Give it a spin to fit your own view of the events, or how you wished it had happened.

Reimagine the popular myths and legends the way you’ve always wished they had happened. You could tweak the personalities of your main characters or place them in a completely different setting. You can even magically transport them to the modern world and see how they react in such an unfamiliar environment. Or maybe they’ve been living in the modern world all along, and you’re retelling the legend with a fresh, contemporary twist.

The possibilities are endless—transform these timeless tales and share your own version with the world!

Playful “what if” questions

What if your puppy turned into a superhero who fought villains at night? What if every time you got out of the metro at a stop, you entered an alternate universe? What if you woke up one day and everyone around you was replaced by a robot that looked exactly like them?

This is such a fun game to play! There are countless “what if” scenarios that you can come up with. All of them could be the plot of your next best-selling novel. And it’s guaranteed to never run out of ideas. Just keep imagining “what if” and make it fun. Try to make the scenarios as ridiculous and strange as possible. Experiment with the craziest ideas and see which one sparks the most excitement for you. You’ve probably just found the topic of your next novel.

I think that Neil Gaiman is a brilliant author who excels at this game. I love the worlds and characters he creates in his stories by imagining “what if” and letting that weird scenario play out.
Now it’s your turn. Let me know in the comments the most fun “what if” you came up with. And then start writing the story.

How to get book ideas from past experiences

Your life is way more interesting than you think. We sometimes think we live boring lives, but if we take a closer look at the events of our lives, there’s plenty of material there to write a few books.

I’m not saying you’re going to write a Harry Potter book based on your school years. But who knows, maybe you do live in a secret wizarding world and went to a school for wizards. How cool would that be?!

Even the rest of us, muggles as we are, we can also find inspiration from our own experiences.

Think of the happiest day of your life. What led to achieving that happiness? Can you take the lessons you learned along the way, add some fictional elements, and transform your own journey into a hero’s journey? After all, you are the hero of your epic story.

By analyzing the highs and lows of your life, sprinkling in a little imagination and a few “what ifs”, you can transform it into a fascinating story of friendship, survival, romance, or even comedy. It all depends on the perspective from which you chose to view and tell your story. Your life isn’t just a series of events—it’s a goldmine of inspiration waiting for you to share all that beauty with the world!

Book inspiration from other stories

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations.” — Mark Twain

You have this idea about a boy who discovers he’s a wizard, and it’s so exciting! You want to tell his story as he gets acquainted with this new world, the friendships he forms, and all the lessons he learns along the way. But then you do a bit of research and realize the story has already been told, and it’s one of the best-selling books of all time. So what do you do then? Give up because someone already wrote that story? NO!

The story hasn’t been told from your perspective, using your views on life and your added imagination. Your upcoming wizard doesn’t have to play quidditch, take potions classes, or fight Voldemort. Your own wizarding world is bursting with possibilities—countless adventures to embark on, lessons to master, and enemies to fight. Explore all the options, unleash your imagination and craft a fantasy story of your own.

Just because an idea for the book is similar to another book, movie, or TV show, it doesn’t mean the story will be the same. Of course, you shouldn’t copy the idea and write something that is almost identical to the original one. That’s plagiarism, and it’s a big NO-NO! Instead, craft a story that’s uniquely yours—infuse it with your own twist, create a world brimming with wonder, and bring characters to life that you’re excited to share with your readers.

Be authentic. Be yourself and bring your own ideas, quirks, and worldviews into your story. Make it a story worth telling!

Book ideas based on your dreams

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I have hilarious dreams at night. In fact, they’re so funny that I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, laughing out loud because of the ridiculous dreams I just had! So if I ever want to add comedy to my books, I have plenty of ideas to use.

It doesn’t have to be funny dreams, though. It can be any dream you’ve had that you stuck with you. In dreams, we find ourselves visiting new worlds, doing things we normally wouldn’t have the courage to do in real life, and interacting with fascinating people (and even animals).

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night thinking, “This dream would be a good idea for my next novel.” But by the time you wake up in the morning, you just can’t remember what it was? Keeping a notepad and a pen on your nightstand might solve this issue. When you have a dream that’s worth remembering, take your notepad and quickly write down the main idea. You’ll be so happy when you wake up in the morning and find there, right next to you, the idea for your next brilliant novel.
