This post is all about how writing in a café helps writers be more productive, focused, inspired, and happier while writing.

Writing in a café can completely transform your writing routine. From increased focus and motivation to fun little writing adventures and uncovering a fresh set of ideas, café writing might actually be the strategy you were looking for to boost your writing productivity.

Writing at a coffee shop can help you write more, while reducing your stress and rekindling your passion for writing, all without the pressure of strict discipline or burnout.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to discover the benefits of writing in a café and see how to turn café writing into a playful, productive, and fun activity.

Writing in a cafè sparks creativity

You’re a writer. So what do you usually do for work? You sit down at your desk and type. And you repeat this process every day.

And it’s great! Having a routine is good for the brain because it signals when it’s time to write. Having a routine boosts your productivity and ensures consistent progress on your book.

But after a while, this process starts to feel like a job. Doing the same thing, in the same place, every single day no longer feels stimulating, and then you start noticing a decline in creativity.

While routines are great for productivity, novelty is what you need for your creativity to flourish. That’s why changing your workspace from time to time can be great for sparking new ideas, especially when you feel stuck.

Changing your writing environment from time to time brings a sense of excitement and adventure back into your writing process. The background noise, the soft music, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm croissants, and even the conversations happening at the next table, can help stimulate your brain and spark fresh ideas for your novel.

So next time you don’t feel like sitting down at your desk to write, or you’re dealing with writer’s block, try writing in a café. You’ll feel more relaxed, more energized (especially with a cup of coffee by your side), and before you know it, your ideas will start flowing back to your refreshed brain.

We’ve seen in a previous post how J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter books in cafés. The amazing wizarding world she created is proof that writing in a coffee shop can do wonders for your creativity.

RELATED POST: The Writing Habits of Famous Authors

Background noise improves writing focus

The sound of the espresso machine, the soft conversations at the table next to you, and the music playing in the background can work wonders for your focus.

You’d naturally assume that all these sounds should be distracting. And they probably would be if they were directly involving you. But the coffee machine isn’t your responsibility, you’re not the one preparing the drinks. And the conversations taking place at nearby tables don’t have anything to do with you either.

Unless you’re wearing a funny costume for your café writing session. That might change the topic of a few conversations. And if you’re wearing that, you probably don’t care what others say about you anyway. Good for you!

When it comes to café music, I found that both soft and upbeat music can help with my focus, just in different ways. The soft, relaxing music calms your mind and supports creativity, while the more upbeat music energizes you and helps with a faster flow of ideas.

Now, you might be the kind of writer who needs total silence when writing. And that’s perfectly okay. We each have our own way of getting into creative mode. If you like silence, you can still write from a café, you just need to remember to bring your noise-canceling headphones with you. That way, you still benefit from the change of environment and enjoy the cozy café writing atmosphere while blocking out all the external noise.

The coffee shop atmosphere becomes your accountability partner

Writing at home certainly has a lot of advantages, but it also comes with certain disadvantages. And one of the biggest ones is that writing from home makes it incredibly easy to procrastinate.

You suddenly remember that there are some dishes in the sink that urgently need washing, even though they’ve been sitting there for days. Or you need to get a snack. And when that’s done, you need another one. And then another one.

Or you just need to quickly look something up online, and two hours later you realize you’re reading a Wikipedia article about the platypus. Now, don’t get me wrong. The platypus is an absolutely fascinating creature. But do you even remember how you ended up on that page, so far from the topic of your novel? And if you are writing a book about platypuses, do let me know. I love those little guys!

The point is that working from home comes with endless distractions that prevent you from actually writing. But when you’re going to a café to write, that is your sole objective while you’re there. You’re there to write, so you use that time intentionally to work on your novel.

Writing in a café creates accountability, giving you a clear purpose and a focused writing period dedicated entirely to your novel, free from all the tempting distractions you have at home.

Cafè writing makes writing more fun

I wrote the script for this video and blog post in a café. And I had so much fun while writing it!

First, I love the background music, and I was dancing at the table while writing. What do I care what other people think of me? I was productive and having lots of fun at the same time! That’s a great writing session for me.

Second, café writing makes it easy to play with your writing sprints. Instead of setting your writing sprint to precisely 25 minutes, you can have fun adjusting the duration to match the café atmosphere. Write for the length of a song. Or until the next person walks into the café. Or for as long as it takes you to drink a coffee.

Just be careful with this last one so you don’t drink too much coffee. Health first! Always!

Third, when you’re writing in a café you can have a fun little competition with other people from the café, people who don’t even have a clue that they are competing with you. See if you can achieve your writing goal before the person working at the table next to yours finishes their task.

With so many people working on their own projects in cafés, it’s easy to find a friendly “competitor.” Will you be able to complete your scene before they close their laptop? This kind of playful competition increases your productivity and makes the writing process a lot more fun.

Cafès are a source of inspiration for your novels

I mentioned earlier that the conversations taking place at nearby tables have nothing to do with you. And usually, that’s true. But they can, however, provide fresh ideas for your novels.

Every person has an interesting story to tell based on their life experiences. So when you overhear even small snippets of their stories from their conversations, I’m pretty sure they will spark some ideas for your next book.

It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as the plot of Ocean’s Eleven, Die Hard, or Red Notice, but you can still find inspiration for your stories from the lived experiences of those around you. People are fascinating, so why not use them as inspiration for your future novel?

And maybe there’s not a big conversation happening next to you. Maybe it’s just one person quietly sipping his coffee. You can try to imagine what his story might be. What was the greatest adventure of his life? The biggest regret and the proudest achievement?

And you know what? You don’t have to stop at imagining. Why not start a conversation? That way you actually get to hear someone’s story, get fresh ideas, and maybe even make a new friend along the way.

Writing in a cafè connects you with the writing community

You know what makes writing even more fun? Writing together with other writers.

When I moved to Vancouver, I didn’t know almost anyone here. So joining a writing group was great both for socializing and for boosting my writing productivity.

When we meet to work in a coffee shop, each of us focused on our own project, it significantly boosts my writing productivity. Whether I’m brainstorming new ideas, plotting a novel, or writing a blog post, being surrounded by other writers in a café makes me feel completely energized — almost like my creativity is supercharged.

On the one hand, there’s the café itself, with all the writing benefits I mentioned before. And on the other hand, there’s the community. It’s a powerful combination for a productive, happy writer.

When you’re with other writers and interact with people facing similar challenges and writing struggles, it makes those struggles feel more bearable. It reminds you that you’re not alone in this journey. You support and encourage each other, making the writing process lighter and you have more fun writing.

This post was all about the benefits of writing in a café. If you enjoyed it, you might also enjoy this post:

Writing Habit #1: Start with a tiny writing warm-up

Sometimes, when you start your writing session, it can take a little while to get into writing mode. One simple action you can take to help you get there much faster is reading what you wrote the previous day.

This small first step helps you warm up for the new writing session. As you read, you remember what you wrote, what your characters are doing right now, and what was the last thing that happened in the story.

By reconnecting with your story first, it becomes much easier, and more fun, to continue writing right where you left off.

Writing Habit #2: Create a daily writing trigger

Is there anything you could use to signal to your brain that it’s time to start writing? Maybe you train your brain to know that your writing starts right after breakfast? Or after an early morning walk. Or, if you’re a night owl, right after dinner.

By adding your writing session into a specific time slot in your daily routine, it becomes much easier to start writing because you’re signaling to your brain that this is writing time now.

Your brain learns the pattern: you’ve done your daily exercise, and the next thing it expects is for you to sit down and write. So you’re basically training your muse to show up as soon as you take that action.

Writing inspiration… on command.

Writing Habit #3: End every session mid-sentence

I’ve heard several authors suggest this habit, but it’s not one that works for me personally. I’ll still mention it here because many writers do find it useful.

The idea is to stop your writing session mid-sentence, so that the next day it’s easier to jump straight back into writing by continuing from where you left off.

Every time I’ve tried to do this, it has actually made me more confused. When I’m writing, I know exactly what I want to say, but if I stop mid-sentence, the next day I don’t always remember how I wanted to phrase that sentence or where I was going with it.

Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. I’m curious if it actually helped you get into writing faster.

Writing Habit #4: Set a ridiculously easy daily writing goal

Sometimes we procrastinate on starting to write because our word count target is overwhelming. If you say to yourself, “Today, I have to write 3000 words,” that can feel overwhelming, and it makes you dread even starting your writing session.

But what if, instead of 3000 words, you set your word count target to just 100 words? Suddenly, that feels much more achievable and a lot less intimidating.

And here’s the fun part: once you start writing, you often end up writing a lot more than 100 words. Lowering the word count target for the day might actually help you write more, and you’ll feel a lot less stressed while writing.

Writing Habit #5: Turn writing into a mini game

Writing is always easier when you have fun writing. When you find ways to gamify writing, you turn a task into a playful, fun activity instead of a chore.

So what can you do to gamify writing? One simple way is to use the Pomodoro technique and, with each new writing sprint, try to beat your word count from the previous writing sprint. It becomes a friendly competition with yourself where the only winner is you. And no matter what your final word count is, you still win, because you’re advancing your book.

RELATED POST: The Pomodoro Technique for Writers

If you need help tracking your word count, I created a free word count tracker Google Sheet (linked in the form below) that you can use to track your writing sprints, your daily writing progress, and your overall book progress.

And if you love stickers, like I do, you can use them to decorate your writing tracker every time you reach a new writing milestone. Pretty stickers as a reward for playing a fun writing game.

There are so many fun ways to gamify writing and enjoy the writing sessions more. What’s your favorite way to gamify writing?

Writing Habit #6: Create a writing ritual you love

Having a writing ritual signals to your brain that you’re in writing mode, and that this is the time to focus only on your writing.

Your writing ritual doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as having one dedicated spot in your home where you always write. Or maybe you always write at your favorite café.

You can also create a fully immersive writing atmosphere for your session using lighting, sound, a specific place, a dedicated keyboard, or even a special coffee next to you. All of these little cues signal to your brain that this is writing time.

My writing ritual includes fairy lights and the Ravenclaw Common Room sound atmosphere from ambient-mixer.com. What’s your special writing ritual?

Writing Habit #7: Separate writing time from editing time

One thing that really helped me increase my daily writing productivity was separating writing from editing. Writing and editing use two different parts of the brain.

When you’re writing, you’re being creative. You’re building new worlds, creating new characters, and using your imagination to the fullest. When you’re editing, on the other hand, you’re being more analytical, checking for errors and fixing things that are already on the page.

So when you keep switching from writing to editing during the same session, everything slows down. Your brain keeps switching from creative mode to analytical mode, and that makes the entire process feel a lot harder than it needs to be.

A simple fix is to keep them separate in your daily writing routine. Write first and write messy. Nobody is going to see it or judge your first draft. And when it’s done, you can go into analytical mode and focus on refining and improving your manuscript.

Writing Habit #8: Celebrate showing up (not word count)

When we’re ambitious and overly critical of ourselves, we can start to feel guilty if we show up for the writing session and end up not writing any new words.

But just because you didn’t add any new words to the page doesn’t mean that you didn’t make progress on your book. Maybe your writing session was spent brainstorming new ideas on where to take the plot next, or coming up with new ways to make your characters miserable, or how to save them.

Maybe you simply reread what you wrote last time, so you can reconnect with your story and figure out how to continue tomorrow. All of that counts as progress.

Just because you don’t have a new number to add to your word count tracker doesn’t mean you weren’t working. Writing is so much more than adding one word after another. It involves lots of brainstorming, world-building, character development, and just… thinking.

Celebrate showing up and spending time in the world of your book, even if it was just for a short while.

Writing Habit #9: End the writing day on a cheerful note

We often tend to focus on the critical side. So we say to ourselves, “I only wrote this many words today,” or “I should be further along after this writing session.”

But remember that every small progress is still progress. And both your current writing session and your next one will feel so much better if you take a moment to celebrate today’s wins.

Celebrate that you showed up. Give yourself a little sticker, or a bigger reward, for another day where you showed up for your book. Leave yourself an encouraging note for tomorrow. Find small, fun ways to celebrate and end today’s session on a positive note.

When you do that, the day and your writing will feel lighter and happier. You’ll enjoy the process so much more when you celebrate your progress instead of criticizing yourself for not being where you thought you “should” be.

Big writing goals are built on small daily writing habits. Choose the ones that feel good, let go of the rest, and enjoy the process of becoming a more consistent writer.

How do you keep writing without the external validation and the dopamine hit that comes with it? The short answer, dear happy writer, is that writing for the pure joy of it is so much more fun than writing for others’ approval.

Remembering why you write

When we talked about how to write when you don’t feel like it, we discussed the importance of finding your why. Knowing and remembering why you started writing in the first place is an excellent motivator to keep writing, even when you don’t feel like it. And it also works for staying motivated to write without external validation.

You might be going through a period where you simply have nothing to share, and you just need to keep focusing on your manuscript so you can publish it, and then you’ll have something to share. But in the meantime, you have to keep going.

There are two instances that may require you to keep writing without external validation.

The audience’s lack of engagement

First, as sad as this may be, you won’t always get the external validation you’re hoping for. Maybe you wrote a book you’re absolutely thrilled with, and when you published it, it didn’t get the reviews you were expecting. It just didn’t click with some readers.

What do you do then? Never write another word again?

Out of the question! You’re a happy writer! You don’t give up that easily!

When you first started writing, you didn’t write for external validation. You wrote because you had a story (or more) to share. You published it, and now it’s out there for everyone to read. Maybe some readers didn’t give you a 5-star review, but even if you check the reviews of your top 3 favorite books, you’ll see that none of them have only 5-star reviews. Not everybody likes the same things.

It’s not the end of the world!

Just keep writing and keep focusing on the readers who enjoyed your book. They want to read your next book! Focus on that. Write it for them and write it for yourself.

No updates for the audience yet

Another reason for the absence of external validation is that you’re currently going through a period where you don’t have anything to share. That’s okay! Right now, put all your energy into writing your manuscript and getting it ready for the world. But how do you do that without external validation?

Focus on your characters and remember how much fun it is to bring your characters to life.

Remember the joy of writing simply to learn more about your characters and discover more about your world. Your characters take you on countless new adventures every day. In these tough moments, focus on the pure joy of discovery and exploration. Use that excitement to write your next book.

Once it’s finished, you’ll have something amazing to share. But in the meantime, the most important thing is to keep going and trust the process!

Gamifying the writing process

Writing doesn’t have to be a serious activity, full of drama and worries. Worries about what might happen once you publish your book, or how long it will take for you to finish the book, or if people will love it will just make writing feel like a stressful work project. But if you gamify writing, you can enjoy every step you take.

Remember when you were a kid and you would be out playing for hours without even realizing how much time had passed? Why not use that in our work? Why does work have to be this stressful activity filled with worries and deadlines? The truth is, writing it doesn’t have to feel like that. So let’s turn work into play!

How to gamify writing

To advance in any game, you must complete a series of challenges or levels. We can apply the same concept to writing. Thus, instead of having an endless to-do list, we’ll have the levels of the game.

You wrote a chapter? Awesome! You get to advance to the next level! As your book grows, you keep advancing from one level to the next, just like you would in a game. So you switch your mindset from “I have to write 1,000 words today” to “I’ll move up one level today!” Isn’t that way more fun?

And here’s how to make the writing game even more fun: set yourself some rewards for when you move up a level, or when you achieve a certain number of words. Just like you would earn coins or cool gear as a video game progresses, you will get some mini-rewards with every new level or word count milestone you complete. And of course, save the big reward for when you finish the whole book. You’ve just finished the game—you deserve it!

You played the game, had fun along the way, and you finished the book! And the best part? You did it all without expecting any external validation. Just your own joy, your own inner drive, and a whole lot of fun. Now that’s definitely something you should feel proud of!

Word Count Mountain: Write to the Top!

To have even more fun with the writing game, I created this free word count mountain tracker to turn your writing journey into an exciting adventure, where you write all the way to the top of your mountain! Each milestone represents a checkpoint on your climb to the word count target for your book.

I created 4 versions of the game: one for 100k, one for 80k, one for 60k, and one where you set your own goal and milestones. You can download them using the form below.

As you reach each word count milestone, color in the path, add stickers, or mark your progress in a way that feels rewarding to you. Not only will you stay motivated by seeing your progress visually, but you’ll also turn writing into a game where each word brings you closer to the summit—your finished book!

Falling in love with your work

Yes, we all want our readers to love our books. But what’s even more important is that we love what we wrote. Are you happy with your work? Do you feel like you really gave it your best? Do you absolutely adore your characters and the wild adventures you’ve sent them on? A “yes” to these questions ensures a fun and satisfying writing journey—no external validation needed.

How do you fall in love with your own writing? Enjoy the writing process and keep a record of your best lines.

Enjoy the journey, not just the destination

Every writer dreams of that magical moment when they get to hold their published book in their hands. We all want to see all that hard work, the countless hours of coffee-fueled typing and the endless revisions pay off, and finally share our craft with the world. But you don’t have to wait until that moment to enjoy your work. You can enjoy it right now!

Remember that the joy of writing doesn’t have to come from sharing it with the world—it can come from the act of writing itself! When you love your characters, enjoy crafting the scenes, and building your imaginary worlds, the writing process itself becomes a deeply rewarding experience. You’re so immersed in that world, you don’t need anyone’s validation to feel good about your work. You feel good about it because you’re in a magical state of flow where you feel like you’re not just writing the story, but you’re actually living the adventure of your life through your characters. What could be more fun than that?

Shifting your focus from expecting praise for your work to enjoying it frees you to create with more joy, curiosity, and confidence—because you’re no longer writing to impress others, you’re writing to express your creativity.

Keep a “Wow, I wrote that!” file

Why wait for someone else to validate your art? You can do it yourself!

Have you ever taken a break from your manuscript for a few days or weeks, and when you finally read it again, you stumbled upon a sentence so unexpectedly brilliant you actually thought to yourself, “I wrote that? Wow, that’s awesome!” The pride you’re feeling in that moment comes from lots of hard work coupled with inspired creativity. And it’s the only validation you need.

But don’t just celebrate it then and move on—capture that magic and preserve it for the future! Use it to fuel your future motivation and creativity. Start a file where you collect all those snippets of your brilliant writing. Every time you surprise yourself with something amazing you’ve written, make sure you add it to your brag file. Your future self will thank you for it, especially during those tough writing days filled with self-doubt. Use it to remind yourself just how brilliant your writing can be, and you won’t need anyone else’s validation to prove it!

Your own words create magic, and they are all the validation you need!

This post is all about the writing habits of famous authors and how they can inspire you to become a more productive and creative writer.

Have you ever wondered how Stephen King manages to write and publish so many incredibly long and successful bestselling novels? Wish you could do the same? It’s not magic—it’s discipline and cultivating the right habits. Today, dear happy writer, we’ll learn how to become more productive writers by studying the writing habits of famous authors. We’ll peek into the daily routines of prolific authors and uncover the secrets to their creativity, productivity, and enjoyable writing sessions.

Whether you’re constantly struggling with a hectic schedule or the occasional, frustrating experience of writer’s block, you can easily borrow these habits from successful authors and apply them to your life. Let the masters inspire you and teach you how to become a more productive writer.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below to learn from the writing habits of famous authors.

Consistency from daily word count goals

We’re starting the journey into the writing habits of famous authors with my favorite author—Stephen King. I love his writing style and how he brilliantly portrays the complexities of human psychology in his many, many novels. But what’s his secret for being so incredibly productive?

Consistency!

Such massive projects demand dedication, consistent work, and a commitment to keep going until you reach the finish line.

Stephen King writes 2000 words (or 6 pages) per day, every single day. He makes no exceptions, not even on Christmas Day or on his birthday. Here’s the perfect role model to follow if you want to have a successful writing career!

I’m not saying you have to write 2000 words a day. What I am saying is that it’s helpful to be consistent in your writing, even if you can only write 200 words a day. Just keep the momentum going so you can move closer to your goal of writing a book!

I know that compared to Stephen King, many writers have far less time to dedicate to writing. A full-time job, family commitments, or health concerns make it challenging to spend several hours per day writing. But maybe you can spare 15-30 minutes per day? These small writing sessions will compound over time, and bit by bit, day by day, your manuscript will grow into that full-length novel you’ve been dreaming of writing.

The key is showing up regularly.

Writing inspiration from a change in scenery

Who doesn’t love a nice, long, relaxing bath? It’s a great way to unwind and clear your mind after a stressful day. And you know what happens when you clear your mind? You make space for new ideas! That’s what helped Agatha Chriestie come up with the intricate plots of her novels. Agatha Chriestie often got new ideas for her novels from taking a bath or washing dishes. Both activities have a meditative effect on the mind, enhancing the flow of creative ideas.

Which is the weirdest place you’ve come up with ideas for your novel? Here are some more examples from other prolific authors:

A graveyard – A bit creepy, I know. But it seemed to work for Marry Shelley, who got her inspiration for her famous novel Frankenstein during her walks through graveyards.

A train – I can’t imagine a world without Harry Potter and all the other beloved characters from the Harry Potter novels. And it all started on a delayed train, where J. K. Rowling sketched her first ideas for the book that would eventually fill the hearts of so many children and adults. Who wouldn’t love to have that kind of inspiration? Did you just switch tabs to book a train ride? I hope it works for you!

A castle – It was a castle in Scotland that helped inspire some of the settings in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

A prison cell – If you were in prison, what would you do with all that time on your hands? Miguel de Cervantes made excellent use of his prison time, beginning to write Don Quixote.

From a hot bath to a bone-chilling graveyard—inspiration may strike at any moment, any place! Have you tried any of these locations? Hopefully not the prison… But the others seem like good places to visit for some inspiration for your novels. Off you go, and don’t forget your notebook!

Productivity from outlining like a master

Okay! I know this one is a bit controversial and that some pantsers have very strong opinions about plotting. But so do plotters, and they swear by it. It’s worth giving it a try, but ultimately, choose the path that feels right for you.

Here’s the fun thing about the internet—you can easily find out the daily routines and writing habits of famous authors. Read about their practices, learn what makes them successful, and then model them.

John Grisham is an extremely successful author of legal thrillers, captivating millions of readers worldwide with bestselling novels like The Firm, The Client, The Pelican Brief, and many others. I wouldn’t mind achieving even a fraction of his success!

John Grisham relies heavily on outlines to keep his story on track. In fact, he mentions he prepares comprehensive 40-50 page outlines to have a good idea of where the story is going before he even starts writing.

An outline of 40 or 50 pages! That’s a lot of advance preparation! But does it work? Considering how successful he is, I’d say yes… Many other successful authors also rely on outlines, using them to shape their books, either in the form of a detailed roadmap or a shorter summary containing the main plot points. Give it a shot and see if outlining works for you.

Efficiency from writing sprints

We’ve talked about writing sprints before, and we’ll talk about them again because they’re a fantastic tool in a writer’s arsenal. They significantly increase your writing efficiency, allowing you to write more quickly.

The English novelist, Anthony Trollope, used writing sprints as a key component to his writing process, his impressive list of publications being all the proof we need of just how effective writing sprints can be. His approach to writing sprints was simple, but highly effective—writing in 15-minute intervals, with a target word count of 250 words for each interval. He dedicated three hours a day to this process, so if you do the math, it adds up to an impressive 3000 words a day.

Talk about efficiency! Wouldn’t you love to be able to write 3000 words a day and have one novel written in one month? Of course, we’re not all able to write 250 words in 15 minutes, but maybe some of us, slower writers (even with the sprinting) can get 250 words in 30 minutes. That’s still progress!

Short, focused bursts of creativity allow us to fully immerse in our novel, enabling us to write as much as we possibly can at maximum speed during a short period of time. Writing sprints also reduce the pressure of having to write an entire novel, keeping us focused on this writing session. And then the next one, and the next one… until the entire book is written. So writing sprints are a key ingredient to becoming a more efficient writer, all while having fun sprinting through the pages.

Work ethic from discipline and daily routine

Some writers resist discipline, thinking that it’s too restrictive, but it’s actually a crucial component of the successful career of many creatives. Talent alone isn’t enough. Many leading artists and writers attribute their achievements to their self-imposed discipline of doing the work, no matter what.

Nora Roberts credits a significant portion of her remarkable success in the publishing world to her unshakable discipline and strong work ethic. Over her long writing career, Nora Roberts published nearly 250 books under two different pen names (Nora Roberts and J. D. Robb), publishing about four books a year. She essentially juggles two writing careers, so if you want to learn how to be an exceptionally prolific author, I’d say there’s no better role model.

How is Nora Roberts so prolific? She has the discipline to sit in front of her computer and write for six to eight hours every day. And she even finds some time to write when she’s on vacation. Now that’s dedication!

Nora Roberts’s work ethic is absolutely impressive, but I realize that it’s a level of commitment that not every writer can match. Writing for six to eight hours feels completely unattainable when you work a full-time job, have a family to take care of, the dogs are begging you to take them out for a walk, and you still have to sleep and take care of your health. And please do prioritize your health, because achieving anything else on the list depends on you being well and healthy.

How can we achieve success like Nora Roberts? That depends on your personal circumstances. If you’re a full-time author, you can definitely try Nora Roberts’ writing routine. Try to cultivate a daily writing habit of six to eight hours if you can focus for that long.

Even with a busy schedule, you can still strive for strong self-discipline, adapting Nora Roberts’ work ethic to your own life. Just one hour a day, every day, dedicated solely to writing and free from distractions, can have a huge impact on your progress. Consistency and dedication are key to a successful writing career. It’s up to you how you tailor them into your own schedule and make them work for you.

Focus from chaos

And now, let’s get back to the magical world of Harry Potter! It takes an incredible amount of imagination and focus to write such a fascinating wizarding world that makes you want to be part of it. So you’d think one would have to be locked away in solitary confinement to bring this world to life.

Turns out isolation isn’t a necessary component for crafting amazing stories. J. K. Rowling wrote the first three books in the Harry Potter series in bustling cafés, proving that you can focus and connect with your muse even in the most chaotic environments. She probably would have continued writing from cafés if fame hadn’t gotten in the way! With the Harry Potter books becoming famous and her fans recognizing her everywhere she went, writing from cafés became counterproductive, leading her to find quieter writing places.

We were talking earlier about the importance of being consistent for a successful writing career. In this day and age, distractions are practically everywhere, conspiring to interfere with our focused writing sessions. Finding a way to write—even with all the noise and distraction of a café—will help you stay consistent in your writing.

J. K. Rowling’s inspiring journey shows us that a writer’s success doesn’t come from finding the ideal, quiet environment for writing. It comes from cultivating the discipline to write effectively regardless of your surroundings, proving that the ability to write anywhere is paramount to success. If she was able to create an entire magical world in the middle of a noisy café, then surely we could also find the focus we need to create our own captivating worlds and characters.

This post is all about the benefits of writing first thing in the morning and how it can set the tone for a focused, inspired, and productive day.

Imagine this scenario: You wake up early in the morning, have your breakfast, and with your reliable cup of coffee next to you, you sit down in your writing chair and start typing. You don’t stop until you achieve your goal for the day. As a result, you finish your writing session before the world starts moving. That, dear happy writer, is the secret power of writing first thing in the morning. Whether you’re an established author or working on your first novel, mornings might just turn out to be your creative superpower.

In this post, I will show you how writing first thing in the morning makes you a more productive writer by helping you write your novel faster, improving your day, and boosting your motivation.

If you prefer the video version, check out the YouTube video below on how to unlock your creative superpower with morning writing sessions.

Clear mind, clear creativity

It’s a brand-new day. The possibilities early in the morning are endless. The world is still asleep with nobody around to bother you. Your mind is fresh and brimming with ideas waiting to come to life. There’s no better time to put your creativity to work.

When you wake up in the morning, your mind is clear of all the clutter and problems from the day before. Writing first thing in the morning prevents all those mundane issues from interfering with your creativity. You can dedicate 100% of your mind to your writing.

Neuroscience studies show that a good night’s sleep restores your brain by flushing out the toxins accumulated during the day. This process optimizes your brain function and provides a more clear mind to tackle creative challenges upon waking up. With improved reasoning, sharper focus, and enhanced problem-solving skills, sleep gives you the mental clarity needed to advance your manuscript with ease and creativity!

Jumpstart your day with a win

Tackling your writing goals first thing in the morning sets the day for success. Even if you don’t do anything else for the rest of the day, you’ve already won. You’re pursuing your goal, and you’ve taken the necessary steps to achieve it. It’s a huge win for the day, and it’s taking you closer to your dream.

Doesn’t it feel awesome when you start your day with a win? It makes you believe you can achieve anything and makes you feel unstoppable and ready to crush any problems the new day brings. Knowing that you’ve already achieved so much before everyone else even got out of bed sets the tone for a successful day. You move through the day more energized and productive in everything you do.

A creative achievement first thing in the morning fuels your imagination and enhances your creativity to take on the rest of your projects for that day. When I was working on my first novel first thing in the morning before going to work, I always felt more energized throughout the day and more resourceful in solving all the challenges that I was confronted with that day, including those I encountered in my day job. For tips on how to balance a day job with your creative endeavors, check out this other post on how to write while working a full-time job.

Fewer distractions, better focus

Your creativity flows more easily and ideas come to life faster when there’s nothing else crowding your brain. The early morning hours provide the medium for creativity to spark because of the fewer distractions, at least in the physical form. There are still many virtual distractions that could interfere with your creative process. So beware of all the Facebook posts and messages sneaking in, as they can derail you from your goal.

When you write before checking social media, emails, or the news, your thoughts remain uncluttered and entirely your own. By avoiding the mental noise of everyone else’s problems, you leave plenty of room for your creativity to shine and your ideas to flow freely! Stay vigilant and resist the urge to scroll, so you can keep your imagination working where it’s needed the most.

Do you find it too difficult to resist the temptation of social media and other virtual distractions? I have the perfect solution for you. I use Freedom on my computer to block all websites except the ones I need for the writing session. It’s amazing how much work you can get done when you can’t access any websites. The Freedom app also works on your phone. This comes in handy when you find that you just can’t help yourself from reaching out for your phone every few minutes. Give yourself the gift of uninterrupted creativity by restricting access to your phone.

Consistent writing momentum

Based on what we’ve seen so far, writing first thing in the morning is clearly a huge win. But you know what would be an even bigger win? Doing it every morning.

Hitting 1000 words in the morning writing session feels amazing, but there’s a catch—it doesn’t get you too close to your goal if you only do it once in a while. You need to show up every morning and do the work consistently. I know that everyone’s situation is different and circumstances might prevent you from forming a daily morning writing habit. But the more often you can show up for your story in the morning, the more you will unlock the benefits of writing in the morning. The key is consistency—that’s where the magic happens!

Having a regular writing routine keeps the story fresh in your mind, helps you get into writing mode faster when you sit down to write, and keeps your story flowing. If you show up consistently, so will your muse!

Increased confidence and self-discipline

You did it! You woke up early and crushed your writing goal for the day—way to go! And guess what? That’s not the only achievement of the day. The benefits of doing this don’t just help in your writing endeavors, but they can also transform all other aspects of your life because you gain two invaluable skills: confidence and self-discipline.

Increased confidence from writing first thing in the morning

When you’ve finished your writing session and see that the day is barely starting, it fills you with a powerful sense of accomplishment. You’ve achieved so much while the others are still asleep. The thought boosts your confidence, and you feel like you can achieve anything.

The confidence from seeing your word count attained carries over into everything else you do that day. You’ve proven to yourself that you can show up, do the work, and achieve your goals. You now know you’ve got what it takes to crush your goals, and with that confidence, you’re ready to take on any problems the new day throws at you.

Increased self-discipline from writing first thing in the morning

You managed to stay in the chair and keep your fingers moving on the keyboard for as long as it took to achieve your writing goal for the day. You now know it’s possible to get it done. Do you know what that does to your brain? It sends the message that I can do anything as long as I stick to it. Besides boosting your confidence, it also shows you how much more you can achieve if you harness the power of self-discipline.

When you combine writing first thing in the morning with consistency, you develop rock-solid self-discipline that will benefit every aspect of your life. This is your new superpower for boosting your productivity and making huge progress in all the projects you’re working on.
Enhanced problem-solving

If you write early in the morning, your characters and your readers will thank you for it. Because in the morning, your mind is fresh, this is the perfect time to deal with all the plot holes and inconsistencies in character arcs.

Put the clarity that comes from a good night’s sleep to work. Use it to brainstorm exciting scenarios that will help you move the plot forward and get your characters into as much trouble as possible and make their life a living hell. Then, getting them out of trouble will require another good night’s sleep and a fresh morning perspective.

I always find that whatever plot issues I had the night before are much easier to solve in the morning. Solutions that felt impossible to spot at night suddenly become crystal clear in the morning when my mind is refreshed and free from the clutter of a day’s worth of information and problems.

Writing first thing in the morning doesn’t just boost your productivity, it also helps you unleash your creativity! By starting your day with a writing session, you’re not just making progress on your novel, but also setting the tone for a day filled with creativity, resourcefulness, and joy. So grab that coffee, head to your favorite writing spot, and let your writing magic unfold. You’ve got this, dear happy writer!

This post was all about the benefits of writing first thing in the morning and how morning writing sessions can make you more productive. If you enjoyed it, then you might also enjoy this post:
